6. Fewer Afghan refugees return this year

• A little over 100 Afghan nationals returned from Pakistan between Jan 1 and April 30 this year underscoring the long-held concerns among refugees about their physical and economic security in their own country.
• The voluntary repatriation drive with the spring being its peak season is assisted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
• Only 24 families (100 individuals, roughly five per family) had left for Afghanistan through the programme from Jan 1 to April 30


7. UN convoy en route in bid to evacuate Mariupol civilians

• A new UN convoy was on May 6, 2022 heading to the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol, which has seen heavy fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces, to try to evacuate civilians, its humanitarian chief said.
• `Today as we speak, a convoy is proceeding to get to Azovstal by tomorrow morning hopefully to receive those civilians remaining in that bleak hell…and take them back to safety,` UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths told a Ukraine donors` conference in Warsaw.
• The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed `that a safe passage operation is ongoing, in coordination with the UN and the parties to the conflict`


8. Siemens unveils H-powered train

• German industrial giant Siemens unveiled on May 5, 2022 its first hydrogen powered train developed with rail operator Deutsche Bahn, with a plan to put it into service regionally in 2024.
• The locomotive which runs on electricity produced by a hydrogen fuel cell `should replace diesel powered trains in regional traffic and reduce carbon emissions on rails to zero,` Deutsche Bahn said in a statement.
• Hydrogen-powered trains is part of the German government`s plan to `electrify 75 percent of the rail network by 2030,` said Michael Theurer, state secretary at the transport ministry


9. Pakistani youngster scales world`s third highest peak

• Pakistani climber Shehroze Kashif, 26, on May 5, 2022 made history by becoming the youngest person in the world and first in his country to reach the summit of Kanchenjunga, the world`s third highest peak (8586m)in Nepal.
• The Lahore resident was accompanied by Namja Bhote, Purnima Shrestha and Ming Temba Sherpa of Nepal, Rudi Bollaert of Belgium and Ariunzul Chuluunbaatar of Mongolia in the expedition organised by Seven Summit Treks.
• Mr Kashif already has the distinction of being the first youngest person in the world to scale two highest peaks, including Everest (8849m) and K2 (8611m)


10. Pakistan climb to fifth spot in ICC Test, ODI rankings

• While Pakistan took one step up in the ICC Test and One-day International rankings to stand at the fifth place from sixth, Australia, New Zealand and India lead the tables world in three formats of the game, according to the latest rankings announced by the International Cricket Council on May 5, 2022.
• Pakistan 20 Test matches during 2021-22 to earn 1865 points to come up at fifth place as England fell to sixth.
• Australia from 19 matches obtained 2439 points to be the leaders, followed by India, New Zealand and South Africa
