6. Pakistan operates second largest public railway network in South Asia

• Pakistan stands second in terms of operating public railway network in South Asia which now totals nearly 80,000kms in the region, a new World Bank report says.
• By the end of 2019, Pakistan has 7,700kms of operating network followed by Bangladesh with nearly 3,000kms and 1,500kms in Sri Lanka.
• The Indian network is by far the largest with 67,000kms, estimates the report.
• The current railway network in South Asia comprised of four countries: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Three of the four railways covered for South Asia comprised parts of the same system until Indian independence in 1947. Since then, they have all continued as, effectively, government departments under the control of a ministry of railways


7. Wapda chairman Muzammil quits, Ashtar slated to become AGP

• Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Chairman Muzammil Hussain resigned on May 7, 2022, citing personal reasons.
• Separately, the government has decided to appoint senior lawyer Ashtar Ausaf as Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP), the principal law officer.
• Outgoing Wapda chairman Mr Hussain, a retired lieutenant general, has submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after serving in the office for more than five years.
• While Mr Hussain didn`t answer phone calls from Dawn, he responded to a message, confirming the development


8. Israel destroys home of Palestinian accused in settler killing

• Israeli forces on May 7, 2022 destroyed the home of a Palestinian accused of killing an Israeli settler last year, sparking clashes.
• Explosives destroyed the apartment of Omar Jaradat in Silat al-Harithiya village, near the flashpoint town of Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank, according to a statement by the Israeli army.
• It said Palestinians clashed with Israeli forces, throwing stones and firebombs, which soldiers responded to with semi-automatic fire. Two Palestinians were wounded, according to an AFP photographer at the scene.
• The clashes add to tensions in Israel and the West Bank as a large-scale manhunt continued for a pair of Palestinians suspected of killing three Israelis in an axe attack Thursday night near Tel Aviv


9. Afghan women told to cover up in public

• The Taliban on May 7, 2022 imposed some of the harshest restrictions on Afghanistan`s women since they seized power, ordering them to cover fully in public, ideally with the traditional burqa.
• Taliban chief Hibatullah Akhundzada approved a strict dress code for women when they are in public. A decree said the best way for a woman to cover her face and body was to wear the chadari, a traditional, blue, all-covering Afghan burqa.
• `They should wear a chadari as it is traditional and respectful,` said the decree approved by Akhundzada and released by Taliban authorities at a ceremony in Kabul


10. Russia steps up Ukraine assaults ahead of Victory Day parade

• Russian forces unleashed new bombardments across the country ahead of Victory Day festivities in Moscow, as Ukraine tried to evacuate more civilians from a besieged Mariupol steel plant on May 7, 2022.
• The Azovstal steel mill is the last pocket of Ukrainian resistance in the devastated port city and its fate has taken on a symbolic value in the broader battle since Russia`s invasion.
• Fighting continues on many fronts, and Ukraine`s defence ministry said it had destroyed another Russian warship a Serna-class landing craft in the Black Sea
