6. PM quits, five killed as violence sweeps Sri Lanka

• Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa quit on May 9, 2022, as an outbreak of political violence killed five people, including an MP, and wounded almost 200.
• Lawmaker Amarakeerthi Athukorala from the ruling party shot two people killing a 27-year-old man and then took his own life after being surrounded by a mob of anti-government protesters outside Colombo, police said.
• And another ruling-party politician who was not named opened fire on anti-government protesters in the southern town of Weeraketiya, killing two and wounding five, according to police.

• French President Emmanuel Macron said on May 9, 2022 it would take `decades` for a candidate like Ukraine to join the EU and suggested building a broader political community of democratic states around the bloc.
• `Even if we gave them candidate status tomorrow, he said of Ukraine, `we all know perfectly well that the process of allowing them to join would take several years, in truth doubtless several decades.` But, noting the urgency of giving Ukraine and other EU hopefuls like Moldova and Georgia a place in the heart of Europe, he called for the creation of `European political community`.
• Russia invaded Ukraine in February, in part to thwart Kyiv`s tilt towards integration with the EU and Nato, and Georgia and Moldova are also partly occupied by Moscow`s troops


9. Biden team revives Asia focus despite preoccupation with Ukraine

• President Joe Biden was clear from the moment he entered office China is the main international competitor and should be the top concern for US foreign policy. Then Russia invaded Ukraine.
• After months devoted to supporting Ukraine and punishing Russian President Vladimir Putin, his US counterpart is shifting focus, at least temporarily, back to Asia, a sign that the ongoing war will not drown out the administration`s other international goals.
• Starting Thursday, Joe Biden will meet leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations for a two-day summit, a sign of personal engagement in a region full of disputes with a rising China


10. UAE to introduce insurance for unemployed residents

• The United Arab Emirates will introduce a form of unemployment insurance, the cabinet said on May 9, 2022, the latest reform by the Gulf country as it strives to attract talent and investment amid increasing regional economic competition.
• Insured workers would receive some money for a limited time period if made unemployed, UAE Prime Minister and Vice President Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, who is also the ruler of trade hub Dubai, said on Twitter, citing a cabinet decision.
• `The intention is to strengthen labour market competitiveness, provide a social umbrella for workers and establish a stable working environment for all,` the statement said. The statement did not specify whether this would apply equally to citizens and non-citizen residents in the UAE
