6. Women TV presenters defy Taliban order to cover faces on air

• Women presenters on Afghanistan`s leading TV channels went on air on May 21, 2022 without covering their faces, defying a Taliban order that they conceal their appearance to comply with the group`s policy.
• Since surging back to power last year the Taliban have imposed a slew of restrictions on civil society, many focused on reining in the rights of women and girls.
• Earlier this month Afghanistan`s supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada issued a diktat for women to cover up fully in public, including their faces, ideally with the traditional burqa


7. Russia halts gas supplies to Finland

• Russia on May 21, 2022 stopped providing natural gas to neighbouring Finland, which has angered Moscow by applying for Nato membership, after the Nordic country refused to pay supplier Gazprom in rubles.
• Following Russia`s Feb 24 invasion of Ukraine, Moscow has asked clients from `unfriendly countries` including EU member states to pay for gas in rubles, a way to sidestep Western financial sanctions against its central bank.
• Gazprom said in a statement on Saturday that it had `completely stopped gas deliveries` as it had not received ruble payments from Finland`s state-owned energy company Gasum `by the end of the working day on May 20`

• Australia`s opposition leader Anthony Albanese claimed victory on May 21, 2022 in national elections.
• `The Australian people have voted for change. I am humbled by this victory,` he told cheering supporters in Sydney.
• Albanese vowed to make Australia a renewable energy `superpower`, give indigenous people a voice in national policy-making, and make equal opportunity for women a national priority.
• Albanese recalled his childhood, brought up by a single mother in Sydney public housing


9. Six killed in Iraq drone strikes blamed on Turkey

• Drone strikes targeting Kurdish rebels killed at least six people, including three civilians, in northern Iraq on May 21, 2022, local officials and the rebels said, blaming Turkey for the attack.
• Turkey routinely carries out attacks in northern Iraq, where the outlawed Kurdistan Workers` Party (PKK) has bases and training camps.
• Saturday`s drone strikes targeted mountainous areas of Chamchamal district, west of the city of Sulaimaniyah, and the Makhmur refugee camp, the officials said.
• There was no immediate comment from the Turkish authorities

• Veteran Pakistan batter Azhar All made an unbeaten double century as he helped Worcestershire rewrite the record books in an English County Championship match against Leicestershire on Friday.
• Azhar and former England U-19 international Jack Haynes put on 281 for the third wicket -a record partnership against Leicestershire, surpassing the 278 by Cyril Walters and Harold Gibbons in 1934.
• Their stand was the cornerstone of Worcestershire`s 456for three, alead of308, at stumps on the second day of four at New Road.
