6. Sri Lanka gets Russian oil to ease shortages

• Cash-strapped Sri Lanka took delivery on May 28, 2022 of Russian oil which could soon be subject to a European embargo to restart operations at the country`s only refinery, the energy minister said.
• The island nation is suffering its worst economic meltdown since independence, with shortages of fuel and other vital goods making life miserable for its 22 million people.
• The state-run Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) refinery was shuttered in March in the wake of Sri Lanka`s foreign exchange crunch, which left the government unable to finance crude imports


7. Moscow carries out hypersonic missile test

• Russian forces on May 28, 2022 announced a latest successful test of their Zircon hypersonic cruise missile as Moscow steps up its Ukraine offensive.
• The missile was fired from the Admiral Gorshkov frigate stationed in the Barents Sea and `successfully hit` a target stationed 1,000 kilometres (625 miles) away in the White Sea in the Arctic, the defence ministry said.
• The ministry added the test was undertaken as part of ongoing `testing of new weapons`.
• The first official Zircon test, which President Vladimir Putin described as a `great event,` came in October 2020. Other tests followed, from the same frigate and from a submerged submarine


8. Russia steps up battle for eastern Ukraine

• Russia pressed its onslaught on eastern Ukraine on May 28, 2022, saying it had captured the strategic town of Lyman and had successfully tested hypersonic missiles in the Arctic.
• Ukrainian forces battled to repel Russian forces from the outskirts of the key city of Severodonetsk, a Ukrainian official said, however denying claims it had been surrounded.
• Russia is waging all-out war for the eastern Donbas region Ukraine`s industrial heartland where President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Moscow of carrying out a `genocide`


9. Japanese Red Army founder walks free after 20 years in prison

• Fusako Shigenobu, the 76-year-old female founder of the once-feared Japanese Red Army, walked free from prison on Saturday after completing a 20-year sentence for a 1974 embassy siege.
• Shigenobu was one of the world`s most notorious women during the 1970s and 1980s, when her radical leftist group carried out armed attacks worldwide in support of the Palestinian cause.
• She left the prison in Tokyo in a black car with her daughter as several supporters held a banner saying: `We love Fusako`.


10. Pakistan women edge SL in scrappy dead rubber to complete whitewash

• After dominating in two lopsided games to secure the series, Pakistan women took it to the last ball to complete their Twenty20 International series whitewash over Sri Lanka here at the South end Club on May 28, 2022.
• The home side was expected to execute a fairly smooth chase of 108 runs a total turning out to be competitive despite a collapse following a blistering opening partnership by Sri Lanka but things got complicated to make the dead rubber an interesting affair.
