6. India withdraws warning on national biometric ID after online panic

• India on May 29, 2022 withdrew a warning not to share photocopies of the national biometric identity card after the announcement caused widespread panic on social media.
• The Aadhaar card, which has a unique number tied to an individual`s fingerprints, face and eye scan, aims to block theft and leakage in India`s welfare schemes. But critics fear it could spawn a surveillance state.
• The press information bureau withdrew the warning two days after issuing it, saying the release was published in the context of an attempt to misuse an edited Aadhaar card, and was being withdrawn `in view of the possibility of the misinterpretation.` The new statement said the Aadhaar ecosys-tem had adequate features to protect the identity and privacy of users, and that users are only advised to exercise `normal prudence`


7. Erdogan opposes entry of `terror-supporting` countries in Nato

• Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said talks with Finland and Sweden about their joining Nato were not at the `expected level` and Ankara cannot say yes to `terrorism-supporting` countries, state broadcaster TRT Haber reported on May 29, 2022.
• Turkey has objected to Sweden and Finland joining the Western defence alliance, holding up a deal that would allow for a historic enlargement following Russia`s invasion of Ukraine. Erdogan`s latest comments indicated his opposition continued.
• `For as long as Tayyip Erdogan is the head of the Republic of Turkey, we definitely cannot say `yes` to countries which support terrorism entering Nato,` he was cited as telling reporters on his return from a trip to Azerbaijan on Saturday


8. Zelensky visits east Ukraine as Russia makes push in Donbas

• Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on May 29, 2022 made his first trip to the country`s war-torn east since the launch of Moscow`s invasion, as Russian forces tightened their grip around key cities in the Donbas region.
• Zelensky`s office posted a video on Telegram of him wearing a bulletproof vest and being shown destroyed buildings in Kharkiv and its surroundings, from where Russian forces have retreated in recent weeks.
• Since failing to capture the capital Kyiv in the early stages of the war, Russia has shifted its focus to the eastern Donbas region as it attempts to consolidate areas under its control


9. Emergency lifted in Sudan

• Sudan`s army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan lifted on May 29, 2022 a state of emergency imposed since last year`s military coup, the ruling sovereign council said.
• Burhan `issued a decree lifting the state of emergency nationwide,`the council said in a statement.
• The order was made `to prepare the atmosphere for a fruitful and meaningful dialogue that achieves stability for the transitional period`, it added.
• Meanwhile, the trial of four people accused of fatally stabbing a senior police officer during anti-coup protests opened in the capital Khartoum on Sunday


10. Shouting `death to Arabs`, Israelis march through Muslim quarter

• Thousands of flag waving Israeli nationalists marched through the Muslim quarter of Jerusalem`s Old City on May 29, 2022 in a deeply divisive parade that Palestinian factions warned could reignite their conflict with Israel.
• Police earlier fired stun grenades at Palestinians who pelted them with stones at the Al Aqsa mosque compound as record numbers of Jews visited the holy site, some of them appearing to pray in defiance of a long-standing ban.
• The annual Jerusalem procession marks Israel`s capture of the Old City in the 1967 Middle East war and draws thousands of cheering, chanting participants to its narrow, stone streets
