1. PM lands in Beijing to `breathe new life` into CPEC

• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif landed in Beijing on November 1, 2022 on his maiden visit to the neighbouring country with the basic purpose of revitalising the ambitious China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), seeking investment in various sectors in Pakistan and increasing bilateral trade.
• According to the Prime Minister Office (PMO), the prime minister, during his visit, will meet the Chinese leadership and review the all-weather strategic partnership and discuss regional and global developments.
• Upon his arrival at the Beijing airport, PM Sharif was accorded a red carpet welcome as smartly-turned out contingents of the Chinese forces presented him with a guard of honour, the PMO statement said


2. President Alvi signs three bills into law

• President Arif Alvi has accorded his assent to three bills earlier passed by parliament, the Presidency said in a press release on November 1, 2022.
• The bills included Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention and Punishment) Bill, 2022; Anti-Dumping Duties (Amendment) Bill, 2022 and Trade Organisations (Amendment) Bill, 2022. The bills, approved under Article 75 of the Constitution, became laws after the assent.
• On Aug 1, the National Assembly passed Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention and Punishment) Bill, 2022, with certain amendments, to criminalise and prevent torture, custodial death and rape committed against persons in custody of public officials



3. Lahore once again sets unique record of world`s most polluted city

• With the start of `fifth season` of smog, the provincial capital of Lahore was spotted as the most polluted city in the world with hazardous levels of air quality when this report was filed at 8pm on November 1, 2022.
• Once termed the city of gardens, the air quality level of Lahore is continuously falling to hazardous levels. On Monday, the worst air quality was noted in the wee hours when the AQI US was 438, according to the igair.com, which monitors the air quality across the world. At the time of filing this report, the air quality index of Lahore was hazardous 303. It should be noted that the air is safe to breath in only if the AQI US is up to 50.
• Individual areas of Lahore fared worse, with air quality near the Lahore Grammar School was 401 on the AQI US in real time (8pm) and Pakistan Engineering Services (Private) 366, CERP office 349, Syed Maratab All Road 340, DH A Phase-H 329 and Chatha Park 328

4. Justice Farooq to be next IHC chief justice

• The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) unanimously approved the name of senior puisne judge of the Islamabad High Court (IHC), Justice Aamer Farooq, as the chief justice of the IHC.
• The seat will likely fall vacant, as the JCP has already recommended incumbent IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah`s elevation to the Supreme Court.
• Headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial, the JCP in its meeting on Oct 24, in addition to a unanimous approval of Justice Minallah, had also approved the candidature of Justice Shahid Waheed of the Lahore High Court and Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi of the Sindh High Court (SHC) for the SC with a majority of five to four both fourth on the seniority list of their respective courts. The commission, however, rejected the nomination of the SHC`s Justice Mohammad Shafi Siddiqui in the same meeting


5. CII gets eight new members

• Eight new members have been appointed for three years in the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), bringing the numbers to its maximum level.
• The new members appointed by the President include Allama Mohamamd Raghib Hussain Naeemi, a prominent cleric belonging to Lahore and the principal of Jaamia Naeemia.
• Others appointed for the three year tenure include Malik Allah Bakhsh Kulyar, who remained a member of CII earlier too, Sahibzada Pir Khalid Sultan Algadri, Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry, Dr Abdul Ghafoor Rashid, Mohammad Jalaluddin.
• The new technical experts in Islamic jurisprudence is retired Justice Altaf Ibrahim Qureshi and Fareeda Raheem has been appointed at one mandatory seat reserved for female technical expert
