1. Russian troops arrive for drill with Pakistan military

• Russian troops arrived here on November 5, 2020 to participate in the joint Russian-Pakistani military exercise codenamed Druzhba (Friendship) 5.
• `Russian Federation Special Forces` contingent arrived in Pakistan for two weeks long joint exercise Druzhba 5. The exercise is aimed at sharing both armies` experiences in counterterrorism domain,` the ISPR said in a statement.
• Russian defence ministry, meanwhile, said the exercise was aimed to strengthen military cooperation between the two countries, and it was being held under the framework of international military cooperation


2. No closure of educational institutions due to Covid

• Federal and provincial education ministers on November 5, 2020 decided not to close educational institutions in the country as positivity rate of coronavirus in the institutions remains `scarcely one to two per cent`.
• The Inter-Provincial Education Ministers Conference (IPEMC), held under the chairmanship of federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood through video link, discussed the existing Covid-19 situation in the country, particularly in educational institutions


3. Nishan-e-Pakistan conferred on Chairman of Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency

• The government has conferred Nishan-e-Pakistan, the country’s highest civil award to Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sefik Dzaferovic.
• The award was given to him in recognition of his contribution for strengthening bilateral relations between Pakistan and Bosnia by President Dr Arif Alvi during a welcome ceremony held at Presidency.
• He played a vital role in this regard as Speaker and President of Bosnia and Herzegovina


4. Saudi Arabia permits PIA to operate two new flights to Al-Qassim

• Saudi Arabia has permitted Pakistan’s national flag carrier, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), to operate two new weekly flights to Al-Qassim province, the kingdom’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said in a statement.
• The flights between the northern Saudi region and Pakistan’s Multan would start on November 19, Arab News reported.
• “Al-Qassim will be PIA’s fifth destination in Saudi Arabia and will be a convenient location for Pakistani expatriates residing in the northern parts of the kingdom,” GACA said. The announcement comes days after Pakistani Ambassador Raja Ali Ejaz’s meeting with GACA president Abdulhadi Al-Mansouri, during which they discussed ways to enhance cooperation in the aviation sector and possibilities for PIA’s expansion in the kingdom


5. President of Kosovo resigns after war crimes indictment

• Kosovo President Hashim Thaci resigned with immediate effect on November 5, 2020 after learning that a war crimes tribunal in The Hague had confirmed his indictment for war crimes.
• Thaci told a news conference in the Kosovo capital Pristina that he felt his resignation was necessary `to protect the integrity of the state` because the judge at the Kosovo Specialist Chamber would not allow him to appear as president


6. Afghan violence rising: watchdog

• Violent attacks in Afghanistan surged by50 percent over recent months even as the Kabul government and the Taliban launched unprecedented peace talks in September, a US watchdog warned on November 5, 2020.
• Despite brief lulls during two temporary cease-fires over the summer, fighting has raged across the country as the Taliban launched devastating attacks on provincial capitals and security installations, with fears the violence may jeopardise negotiations


7. Confident Biden edges ahead in US election, Trump claims fraud

• The knife-edge US presidential race tilted toward Democrat Joe Biden early November 5, 2020, with wins in Michigan and Wisconsin bringing him close to a majority, but President Donald Trump claimed he was being cheated and went to court to try and stop vote counting.
• Tallying of votes continued through a second night in the remaining battleground states where huge turnout and a mountain of mail-in ballots sent by voters trying to avoid exposure to the coronavirus made the job all the harder.


8. UN Assembly to hold session on pandemic

• The UN General Assembly decided on November 5, 2020 to hold a special session focused on international coordination in response to the coronavirus pandemic on Dec 3 and 4 in New York.
• Discussed since June, the meeting is intended to bring together heads of state and government, according to a resolution adopted by 150 of the 193 General Assembly members.
• No country voted against the measure, while the US, Israel and Armenia abstained.


9. Nadal survives Lopez scare to claim 1,000th win

• Rafael Nadal became only the fourth man to score 1,000 wins when he recovered to oust fellow Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez in the second round of the Paris Masters on November 4, 2020.
• Nadal posed at the net with the number 1,000 displayed in large numbers on the court after sealing victory at 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 The 20-time Grand Slam champion joined Jimmy Connors (1,274), Roger Federer (1,242) and Ivan Lendl (1,068) as the only male players to reach the 1,000-win mark since theOpenerabeganin1968


10. Saudi Arabia to host F1 night race next year

• Saudi Arabia will host a Formula One race next year, a move aimed at attracting well-heeled globe-trotting visitors and raising the kingdom`s profile internationally as a tourist destination.
• The kingdom said on November 5, 2020 it will host a night race in November 2021 in the Red Sea city of Jeddah, using scenic roads along the coast. Gulf locales including Manama, Bahrain, and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, already host F1 races, which see A-list Hollywood stars, royals, billionaires, ministers and social media influencers gather for days of partying, discreet talks and deal-making
