1. Govt tastes defeat twice in NA over two bills

• A day after getting seven bills passed from the lower house of parliament in the absence of opposition members and by managing the quorum with the covert support of Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri, the government twice faced defeat at the hands of the opposition in the National Assembly on November 9, 2021 during voting on motions seeking introduction of two bills.
• The opposition first defeated the government with a 117104 vote on a motion moved by Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) MNA Javed Hasnain to seek permission to introduce a private member`s bill aimed at preventing politicians from changing their parties. Then the opposition again defeated the treasury members on a similar motion moved by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker Asma Qadeer for introduction of a bill seeking to enhance punishment for those who passed obnoxious remarks against women

2. New Afghan FM arrives today on first visit to Pakistan

• Afghan Interim Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi will arrive here on November 10, 2021 (today) on a three-day visit to Pakistan as head of a delegation for wide-ranging talks with the authorities.
• A statement issued by the Foreign Office said the visit was taking place as a follow up to Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi`s visit to Kabul on Oct 21.
• The talks will centre on Pakistan-Afghanistan relations, with the focus on enhanced trade, facilitation of transit trade, cross-border movement, land and aviation links, people-to people contacts and regional connectivity.

3. UK adds Sinopharm and Sinovac to approved vaccine list

• The British government on Tuesday said it had added Sinopharm, Sinovac and Covaxin Covid-19 vaccines to its approved list starting November 22.
• British High Commissioner to Pakistan Christian Turner shared the update on Twitter and said it was `good news for Pakistani travellers` The update means that travellers from Pakistan who have received the full doses of one of these three vaccines will be exempt from mandatory home quarantine, and now only require a test on day two.
• Travellers must have proof of full vaccination with a full course of an approve d vaccine. They must have had their final dose of the vaccine at least 14 days before arrival in England, and the day of the final dose does not count as one ofthe14 days

4. New US envoy for Afghanistan to visit Pakistan this week

• The new US Special Representative for Afghanistan, Thomas West, is arriving in Islamabad later this week to clarify US expectations of the Taliban and of any future government in Afghanistan, the State Department said.
• This will be his first visit to Pakistan as the top US diplomat for Afghanistan.
• Mr West replaced Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad who stepped down this week after a tumultuous three-year tenure in which he also negotiated a peace deal with the Taliban

5. Former BD chief justice gets 11 years jail for money laundering

• Bangladesh`s former chief justice was sentenced in absentia to 11 years in jail for corruption on November 9, 2021, in a case that opposition groups and supporters say is politically motivated.
• Surendra Kumar Sinha, 70, headed the Supreme Court when it ruled in 2017 that parliament could not sack judges, a move hailed by lawyers as safeguarding judicial independence.
• Sinha left Bangladesh in late 2017 alleging he had been forced to step aside following the landmark ruling

6. China to skip Delhi dialogue on Afghanistan

• After Pakistan, China has also declined to attend a regional security meeting on Afghanistan which will be hosted by India on Nov 10. (today) China will not attend the regional security dialogue on Afghanistan to be hosted by India, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on November 9, 2021.
• `Due to scheduling reasons, it is inconvenient for China to attend the meeting.
• We have already given our reply to the Indian side,` he said during his regular briefing while responding to a question about whether China has declined to attend the dialogue.

7. Malala Yousafzai ties the knot in UK ceremony

• Pakistani Nobel laureate and rights activist Malala Yousafzai announced on November 9, 2021 that she had tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at her home in Birmingham.
• `Today marks a precious day in my life.
• Asser and I tied the knot to be partners for life. We celebrated a small nikkah ceremony at home in Birmingham with our families.
• Please send us your prayers. We are excited to walk together for the journey ahead,` the 24-year-old posted on Twitter, along with some photos of the couple.

8. Astronauts return to Earth in SpaceX craft after six-month mission

• Four astronauts returned to Earth on November 8, 2021 in a SpaceX craft after spending six months on the International Space Station, a Nasa live broadcast showed, marking the end of a busy mission.
• The international crew conducted thousands of experiments in orbit and helped upgrade the solar panels on the ISS during their `Crew-2` mission.
• Its descent slowed by four huge parachutes, their Dragon spacecraft dubbed `Endeavour` splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico at 10:33pm before it was lifted onto a recovery ship

9. In compensation for cancelled tour, England to play two extra T20s

• England will play two extra Twenty20s in Pakistan next year as part of compensation for cancelling a short tour of the country scheduled last month as the heads of the two countries` cricket boards met here on November 9, 2021.
• The seven-match T20 series between Pakistan and England is expected to be played before the T20 World Cup in Australia in October next year, after which England will return in November-December for their first Test series in Pakistan since 2005.
• The relationship between the two boards had soured after England controversially withdrew their men`s and women`s teams from T20 series in September, citing `growing dangers in travelling to this region`

10. Rohit named new India T20 captain

• Rohit Sharma has been named the new captain of India`s T20 side, replacing Virat Kohli, the cricket board said November 9, 2021 after the side were dumped out of the World Cup.
• The Board of Cricket Control of India tweeted that the 34-year old opening batsman was `named the T20I Captain for India` as it announced the squad for an upcoming tour by New Zealand.
• Fellow opener K.L. Rahul has been named Rohit`s deputy.
• Kohli, who took over T20I captaincy in 2017, had announced his decision to step down in September, citing his `immense workload`. He remains the skipper of the one-day and Test teams
