6. Russian strikes batter Ukraine`s power grid

• Fresh Russian strikes hit cities across Ukraine on November 17, 2022, the latest in a wave of attacks that have crippled the country`s energy infrastructure as winter sets in and temperatures drop.
• Repeated barrages have been disrupting electricity and water supplies to millions of Ukrainians, but the Kremlin blamed civilians` suffering on Kyiv`s refusal to negotiate, rather than on Russian missiles.
• Journalists in several Ukraine cities said the fresh strikes had hit with snow falling for the first time this season and after officials in Kyiv warned of `difficult` days ahead with a cold spell approaching. The salvoes also came as Moscow and Kyiv confirmed the extension of an agreement allowing Ukraine to export grain through the Black Sea, which aims to help ease pressure on the global supply of food

7. Climate talks deadlocked over fund for poor states

• The first draft of a deal being hashed out at the COP27 climate summit in Egypt would keep a target of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, but leaves many of the most contentious issues in the talks unresolved ahead of a Friday deadline.
• Egypt`s COP27 president urged negotiators to overcome their differences, while poor nations slammed the draf t as unambitious for not addressing their need for money to cope with damage already being wrought by climate driven storms, droughts, floods and wildfires.
• `Time is not on our side, let us come together now and deliver by Friday, COP27 President Sameh Shoukry said in a letter to delegates published on Thursday


8. Pelosi to step down from US House leadership

• US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the first woman to hold that influential post, said on November 17, 2022 she will step down as the Democratic leader in the chamber a day after Republicans secured a narrow majority following the midterm elections.
• Pelosi, an 82-year-old liberal from California who has served two stints as speaker, said she will remain in Congress, representing San Francisco in the House as she has done for 35 years


9. Punjab bans Joyland as it hits screens in Islamabad, Sindh today

• Just a day after the federal government cleared the controversial but critically acclaimed film Joyland for release across the country, the province of Punjab, where the PTI and PML-Q are in power, issued a notification to stop the release of the movie in the province.
• The film is being released in Sindh and Islamabad on November 18, 2022 (today).
• A notification by the Punjab Information and Culture Department on Thursday, addressed to the distributor of the film, said: `The Government of the Punjab in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 9 (1&2) Motion Pictures Ordinance, 1979 and rules made thereunder has decided to recall the film in the wake of the persistent complaints received from different quarters

10. Nadal leaves ATP Finals with consolation win over Ruud

• Rafael Nadal saved some honour on November 17, 2022, beating Casper Ruud 7-5, 7-5, as he bowed out of the ATP Finals in Turin at the pool stage.
• Nadal, the top seed in the event in the absence of injured world number one Carlos Alcaraz, had opened by losing his first two matches in the Green Group.
• He was already eliminated when he faced Ruud, who won his first two matches to book a semifinal spot.
