1. US admits Pakistan convinced Taliban to hold talks

• US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad has said Pakistan played important role on making Afghan Taliban agree for peace talks and encouraged them to reduce violence.
• “Pakistan has been helpful to the effort that we have made in the last two years, and they have encouraged the Talibs to enter negotiations with the government and they have encouraged the Talibs to reduce violence. They have also been helpful in terms of interaction with the Afghan leaders,” Khalilzad said in an interview with foreign media


2. Makkah’s Grand Mosque to receive Umrah pilgrims today

• Makkah’s Grand Mosque will see the return of Umrah pilgrims on Sunday for the first time since the pilgrimage was temporarily suspended due to the coronavirus, with the exception of Hajj.
• Pilgrims will gather at allocated sites in Makkah including Ajyad, Al-Shasha, Al-Gazzah and Al-Zahir, and will be transported to the mosque by special busses.
• They will be accompanied by a health care professional. The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques is prepared to receive pilgrims and has various preventative measures in place to ensure their safety, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.


3. Five cops suspended over India gang-rape

• Five senior police officers were suspended in India on October 3, 2020 over their handling of an investigation into the gang-rape and murder of a 19-year-old woman that has sparked outrage across the country and triggered days of protests.
• The seriously injured teenager from the disadvantaged Dalit caste was found in mid-September outside her village in Uttar Pradesh state and died this week in a New Delhi hospital


4. Modi opens tunnel to China border

• Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 3, 2020 opened a Himalayan tunnel that would drastically reduce the time needed to rush troops to the country`s remote Chinese border as tensions grow between the Asian neighbours.
• The tunnel traverses the northern Himachal Pradesh state and lies on one of two main routes for troops headed to border areas in Ladakh


5. Sudan govt, rebel groups sign deal

• Sudan`s power sharing government and several rebel groups on October 3, 2020 formalised a peace agreement aimed at resolving decades of conflict which left millions displaced and hundreds of thousands dead.
• Three major groups signed a preliminary deal in August after months of talks hosted by South Sudan


6. Iran warns Armenia, Azerbaijan against border intrusions

• Iran warned on October 3, 2020 against any “intrusion” by Armenian and Azerbaijani forces fighting over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region after mortar fire hit Iranian villages along the border.
• “Any intrusion upon our country’s territory by either side of the conflict is intolerable (and) we seriously warn all sides to take the necessary precautions in this regard,” foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said in a statement


7. UN chief calls for new push to eliminate nuclear weapons

• The world must return to the path of nuclear disarmament and diffuse a looming arms race among nations with atomic arsenals, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the final major event of the General Assembly’s high level week.
• The elimination of nuclear weapons is vital to the “survival of life on this planet”, he said in his remarks at the commemoration of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, adding that it was the only way “to completely eliminate nuclear risk.”


8. Egypt unveils coffins buried 2,500 years ago

• Egypt-Archaeologists in Egypt said October 3, 2020 they had found 59 well-preserved and sealed wooden coffins over recent weeks that were buried more than 2,500 years ago.
• Opening one of the ornately decorated sarcophagi before assembled media, the team revealed mummified remains wrapped in burial cloth that bore hieroglyphic inscriptions in bright colours.
• The dramatic find was unearthed south of Cairo in the sprawling burial ground of Saqqara, the necropolis of the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis, a UNESCO World Heritage site. “We are very happy about this discovery,” said Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.
• Since the find of the first 13 coffins was announced almost three weeks ago, more have been discovered in shafts at depths of up to 12 metres (40 feet).


9. India’s coronavirus death toll passes 100,000 with no sign of an end

• Deaths from the novel coronavirus in India passed 100,000 on October 3, 2020, official data showed as the pandemic continued to rage across the world’s second most populous country.
• A total of 100,842 people have now died, health ministry figures showed, giving India the third-highest death toll in the world behind the United States and Brazil.


10. India’s Dhoni now most capped IPL player

• India’s Mahendra Singh Dhoni has become the most-capped IPL player even as his Chennai Super Kings team, currently bottom of the table, faltered in yet another run chase.
• The 39-year-old has now played 194 Indian Premier League matches, and overtook on Friday his former India and CSK teammate Suresh Raina, who has 193 games.
• The former India skipper Dhoni and Raina both announced their retirement from international cricket last month
