1. Pakistan leads 55-nation group supporting China on Hong Kong

• Pakistan made a joint statement on behalf of 55 countries at the United Nations evening, declaring Hong Kong an inalienable part of China and urging foreign forces not to interfere in Beijing`s internal affairs.
• Cuba, too, made a joint statement on behalf of 45 countries in support of China`s counter-terrorism measures in Xinjiang. Kuwait made a similar statement supporting China on behalf of three Arab nations


2. Squadrons take part in road runway exercise

• Pakistan Air Force (PAF) fighter jets participated in a tactical landing exercise on the Islamabad-Lahore motorway on October 7, 2020.
• Federal Minister for Communications and Postal Services Murad Saeed was the chief guest on the occasion. On his arrival at the venue, he was received by Air Vice Marshal Zaffar Aslam, Air Officer Commanding, Central Air Command.
• Fighter jets along with trainer aircraft from various PAF squadrons participated in the exercise, which over the last decade has become a regular feature of operational preparedness.


3. Hina Jilani nominated for prestigious rights award

• Well-known pro-democracy campaigner and civil rights activist Hina Jilani was on October 7, 2020 nominated for the Stockholm Human Rights Award (2020).
• `It is a great honour,` Ms Jilani said talking to Dawn about her nomination.
• `Especially so because the award has come from my own community the legal fraternity.
• The annual award is jointly bestowed by the Swedish Bar Association, the International Bar Association (IBA) and the International Legal Assistance Consortium (ILAC).


4. WB sees poverty rise, muted recovery over two years

• Forecasting worst recession in South Asia, the World Bank sees an increase in poverty in Pakistan over the next two years coupled with muted and uncertain economic recovery owing to the adverse impacts of Covid-19.
• `In Pakistan, economic growth is projected to remain below potential, at 0.5pc for FY21 compared to over 4pc annual average in the three years to FY2019,` said the bank in its latest South Asia Economic Focus report, a twice-a-year publication


5. Punjab under `micro smart lockdowns` amid fears of Covid-19 resurgence

• Fearing a second wave of coronavirus following a sudden surge in the number of positive cases, the Punjab government has enforced `micro smart lockdowns` in all 36 districts of the province to curtail the spread of the virus.
• The surge was witnessed particularly following the reopening of educational institutes in Punjab and continued violation of the Covid-19 guidelines at public places, government offices, and business points


6. Court declares Greek neo-Nazi party a criminal group

• A Greek court found the leaders of neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn guilty of running a criminal organisation on October 7, 2020 at the end of a historic trial that was hailed by the prime minister as a victory for democracy.
• The judgement in an Athens court came as police and anti-fascist demonstrators clashed outside the courthouse, on the sidelines of a large protest of some 15,000 people


7. Russia successfully tests new hypersonic missile

• Russia on October 7, 2020 said it had successfully tested a new hypersonic anti-ship cruise missile in a move hailed by President Vladimir Putin as a `great event` for the country.
• The military said that the Tsirkon missile was fired from the Admiral Gorshkov frigate in the White Sea on Tuesday morning in the Russian Arctic and successfully hit its target.
• Valery Gerasimov, chief of the Russian military`s General Staff, told Putin who turned 68 on Wednesday that it was the first time the missile had successfully struck a target at sea


8. Last month was warmest September on record: report

• Earth`s surface was warmer last month than during any September on record, with temperatures since January tracking those of the hottest calendar year in 2016, the European Union`s Earth Observation Programme said on Wednesday.
• This year has now seen three months of record warmth January, May and September with June and April virtually tied for first, the Copernicus Climate Change Service reported


9. Women creators of gene `scissors` clinch chemistry Nobel

• Two women scientists won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry on October 7, 2020 for creating genetic `scissors` that can rewrite the code of life, contributing to new cancer therapies and holding out the prospect of curing hereditary diseases.
• Emmanuelle Charpentier, who is French, and American Jennifer Doudna share the 10 million Swedish crown ($1.1 million) prize for developing the CRISPR/Cas9 tool to edit the DNA of animals, plants and microorganisms with precision


10. Three new Special Economic Zones approved

• A meeting of the Board of Approvals (BOA) for Special Economic Zones (SEZs) on October 7, 2020 formally approved three new SEZs, taking the total number of such areas in the country to 20.
• The meeting was presided over by Prime Minister Imran Khan. According to an official announcement of the PM Office, the new SEZs were National Science & Technology Park, Islamabad, JW-SEZ China-Pakistan SEZ Raiwind in Punjab, and Dhabeji SEZ in Sindh.
