6. KP govt distances itself from talks with Taliban

• Special Assistant to Chief Minister on Information Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif said on October 19, 2022 that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had nothing to do with the negotiations with Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
• Addressing a news conference at Swat Press Club during his visit to the district, he said that he was a representative of the state of Pakistan in the negotiations, facilitated by the Afghan Taliban government.
• He said that talks were held with TTP within the jurisdiction of Constitution and law of the land.
• However, he said that both parties were yet to reach any decision. He said that negotiations with TTP were held to curb the menace of terrorism in the country


7. Modi opens work on airbase near Pakistan border

• Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 19, 2022 laid the foundation stone of a new airbase coming up in north Gujarat near the India Pakistan border and said it would emerge as an effective centre for the country`s security.
• The move followed the opening of a defence exhibition in the state and the meeting of defence ministers from the Indian Ocean Rim, mostly from African countries, on Tuesday.
• In New Delhi on Wednesday, Mr Modi held forth on terrorism and other crimes as he opened the 90th Interpol General Assembly, the supreme governing body of the world`s largest international police organisation

8. Truss` govt rocked as interior minister departs

• The UK`s hardline interior minister Suella Braverman quit the government on October 19, 2022, heaping more doubt on the survival chances of Prime Minister Liz Truss after her right-wing economic agenda unravelled.
• Braverman said she had resigned after using her personal email to send an official document to a colleague.
• While calling it a `technical infringement` of government rules, she wrote in her resignation letter: `I have made a mistake; I accept responsibility; I resign.` The tone contrasted with widespread criticism of Truss for failing to step down herself, after forcing her finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng to take the blame for a disastrous budget. Braverman said she had `serious concerns` that the prime minister was breaking manifesto promises


9. Hamas resumes Syria ties after 10 years; team meets Assad

• Palestinian movement Hamas on October 19, 2022 said it restored relations with the Syrian government after a visiting delegation held a `historic meeting` with President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus.
• The Islamist group, which controls the Gaza Strip, was long one of Syria`s closest allies, in large part due to a shared enmity towards Israel. But it left Syria in 2012 after condemning the Assad government`s brutal suppression of protests in March 2011, which triggered the country`s descent into civil war.
• `This is a glorious and important day, in which we come back to our dear Syria to resume joint work, Hamas chief of Arab relations Khalil al-Hayya told reporters in Damascus


10. Putin declares martial law in annexed regions of Ukraine

• Russian President Vladimir Putin on October 19, 2022 declared martial law in four regions of Ukraine recently annexed by Moscow as his proxy officials in a southern-held city pulled out with Ukraine troops advancing.
• Putin`s decree to introduce military rule in the Moscow-controlled regions also gives additional power to authorities in Russian border areas and comes after a string of battlefield defeats.
• `We are working on solving very complex large-scale tasks to ensure security and protect the future of Russia, Putin said.
• The decree gives greater powers to limit movement to from and within the areas and allows for the residents of those territories to be moved to `safe zones`
