6. Ukraine faces power cuts after Russian strikes, more flee Kherson

• Critical infrastructure across Ukraine was pounded by more than a dozen Russian missiles on October 22, 2022, the Ukrainian air force said, with several regions reporting strikes on energy facilities and power outages.
• At the same time Russian occupation authorities in the Ukrainian city of Kherson urged civilians to leave immediately citing what they called a tense military situation as Ukraine`s forces advance.
• Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy wrote on the Telegram app regarding Russian attacks on infrastructure that began overnight: `The enemy launched a massive attack: 36 rockets, most of which were shot down.` The air force command earlier had said 33 missiles had been fired at Ukraine on Saturday morning, adding that 18 of them had been shot down. Since Oct 10, Russia has launched a series of devastating salvos at Ukraine`s power infrastructure, which have hit at least half of its thermal power generation and up to 40pc of the entire system

8. Israeli forces kill Palestinian in West Bank

• Israeli soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian in the occupied West Bank on Saturday, Palestinian health officials said, and a Palestinian stabbed an Israeli in Jerusalem, police said.
• The Israeli military said its troops were trying to detain a vehicle after its passengers had crossed illegally into Israel. It said the vehicle fled and hit a soldier, after which `the soldiers fired towards the vehicle`.
• One of the passengers died at hospital, Palestinian hospital officials said. The man`s father told Palestinian Qudsnet news that his son was headed for work when he was shot. It was unclear whether he had an entry permit into Israel. The official said Rabi Arafah Rabi, 32, was hit by `a bullet to the head` at a checkpoint southeast of the city of Qalqilya

• Devon Conway carried his bat with a majestic unbeaten 92 as New Zealand thrashed champions Australia by 89 runs in a rematch of last year`s final, opening the Super 12 stage with a bang at the Twenty20 World Cup on October 22, 2022.
• Expatriate New Zealanders turned out in numbers at a packed Sydney Cricket Ground and were treated to fireworks from the Black Caps batters as they blasted their way to 200 for three in their 20 overs after Conway smashed the final ball for a six, joining a select group to make 90 or more at a World Cup


10. Curran-inspired England outclass Afghanistan

• England began their Twenty20 World Cup campaign with a five-wicket win over Afghanistan on October 22, 2022 courtesy of seamer Sam Curran`s haul of 5-10 and a sublime effort in the field.
• Afghanistan crumbled to 112 all out in 19.4 overs after being sent in to bat. Ibrahim Zadran (32) and Usman Ghani (30) provided the only resistance before falling to Curran, who claimed his career-best figures in 3.4 overs.
• England chased down the modest target with 11 balls to spare, reaching 113-5 and maintaining their unblemished record at Perth Stadium after three visits
