1. Army sends out big guns to plead its case

• With the battle of narratives in the last stretch ahead of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf`s (PTI) `long march` on Islamabad, the army and the country`s premier intelligence agency on October 27, 2022 took off their gloves and alleged that their leadership was being maligned for refusing to help former prime minister Imran Khan through `illegal and extraconstitutional means` ahead of a confidence vote in parliament earlier this year and that he attempted to entice Army Chief Gen Qamar Bajwa with an `indefinite extension` in a last-ditch attempt to save his government.
• In an unprecedented appearance at a media conference by the spy chief, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum spoke alongside military spokesman Lt Gen Babar Iftikhar

2. ECC okays Rs31bn suppl grant to defence ministry

• The Economic Coordination Commitree (ECC) of the cabinet on October 27, 2022 approved a Rs31 billion supplementary grant to the defence ministry and cleared an out-of-court settlement with three `nonperforming and defaulter` oil and gas companies over 11 exploration and concession blocks to push for new domestic hydrocarbon finds.
• In a meeting presided over by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, the committee also approved payment of monthly salaries to the remaining employees of the defunct Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) throughout the year and allowed the transfer of the working interest of Eni an Italian multinational energy company in Pakistan to a little-known firm on the guarantee of Hubco.
• An official statement said the ECC approved technical supplementary grants of Rs30.89bn in favour of the defence division for unspecified expenses and Rs1bn for the Ministry of Housing and Works

3. No convictions in 96pc of journalist killings in Pakistan: report

• There have been no convictions in 96pc of murder cases of journalists in Pakistan between 2012 and 2022, according to Freedom Network`s Annual Impunity 2022 report released on October 27, 2022.
• The report `The killing fields: no justice for Pakistan`s murdered journalists` was launched ahead of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, which falls on November 2.
• The research was framed in the context of the 10-year anniversary of the 2012 United Nations Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity, which Pakistan had first endorsed in October 2013 and later committed to implementing in the Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals Act 2021.
• According to the report, 53 Pakistani journalists were killed between 2012 and 2022 but the perpetrators were convicted in only two out of these 53 cases

4. Pakistan, Egypt vow to boost bilateral trade

• Pakistan and Egypt on October 27, 2022 vowed to boost bilateral trade, economic and diplomatic ties and emphasised people-to-people contacts.
• According to the Prime Minister House, both sides renewed this pledge when Ambassador of Egypt Tarek Mohamed Dahroug called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The discussion focused on further strengthening of Pakistan-Egypt relations and the upcoming COP-27 in Egypt.
• The prime minister appreciated Egypt`s support and solidarity in the wake of climate-induced floods which caused massive devastation in Pakistan.
• The prime minister congratulated the Egyptian government on hosting COP-27 in Sharm El-Sheikh

5. Xi says China, US must `find ways to get along`

• President Xi Jinping said China and the United States must `find ways to get along` to safeguard world peace and development, state media reported on October 27, 2022, as he embarks on his precedent breaking third term in power.
• China and the United States have butted heads in recent years on issues ranging from Beijing`s aggression towards self-governing Taiwan to its crackdown in Hong Kong and alleged rights abuses in Xinjiang.
• Washington has also accused Beijing of providing diplomatic cover for Russia`s invasion of Ukraine.
• Xi sealed another five years as China`s leader at the end of a twice-a-decade Communist Party Congress on Sunday

6. Attack on Taliban vehicle kills five; IS claims responsibility

• An attack on a vehicle in western Afghanistan killed five medical personnel employed by Taliban security forces on Thursday, a defence ministry spokesperson said.
• The militant Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, according to the militant group`s channel on Telegram.
• Taliban Ministry of Defence spokesperson Enayatullah Khowrazmi said several employees were also injured in the attack.

7. Israel, Lebanon strike `historic` maritime border deal

• Israel and Lebanon struck a US-brokered maritime border agreement on October 27, 2022 that opens up lucrative offshore gas fields for the neighbours that remain technically at war.
• US President Joe Biden hailed the `historic` deal that comes as Western powers clamour to open up new energy production and reduce vulnerability to supply cuts from Russia.
• The agreement was signe d separately by Lebanon`s President Michel Aoun in Beirut and by Israel`s Prime Minister Yair Lapid in Jerusalem, and went into effect after the papers were delivered to mediators.
• `Both parties took the final steps to bring the agreement into force and submitted the final paperwork to the United Nations in the presence of the United States, Biden said in a statement

8. World faces most dangerous decade since WWII: Putin

• President Vladimir Putin said on October 27, 2022 that the world faced the most dangerous decade since World War Two, accusing what he cast as a declining West of engaging in nuclear blackmail against Russia.
• Putin said he had no regrets about sending troops into Ukraine, and accused the West of inciting the war and playing a `dangerous, bloody and dirty` geopolitical game that was sowing chaos across the world.
• `The historical period of the West`s undivided dominance over world affairs is coming to an end,` Putin, Russia`s paramount leader, told the Valdai Discussion Club, a gathering of Russian specialists

9. Indian minister speaks of annexing Gilgit-Baltistan

• Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on October 27, 2022 he hoped to have Gilgit Baltistan as part of India to complete the mission the Modi government began by annexing held Kashmir in Aug 2019.
• Mr Singh is visiting the occupied region to celebrate the landing of Indian forces in the state a day after New Delhi allegedly signed the Instrument of Accession with its Hindu ruler on Oct 26, 1947. Pakistan disputes the narrative.
• Mr Singh`s claims are linked to a 1994 resolution on Gilgit and Baltistan passed by the Indian parliament when Narasimha Rao was the prime minister, but it also follows two events that ruffled feathers in New Delhi

10. Zimbabwe exploit Pakistan`s batting woes in shock win

• Pakistan have only themselves to blame after their shocking failure to chase 131 runs against Zimbabwe.
• Zimbabwe bowled and fielded out of their skins to claim a famous one run victory at Perth as Pakistan`s batsmen melted under the pressure to return one of the country`s more embarrassing defeats in international tournaments.
• In a sad twist of fate, the result once more rested on the shoulders of Mohammad Nawaz in the final over but this time with the bat. And, as much as every Pakistan supporter wished for a reversal for fortunes, it was Nawaz`s mistimed lofted drive that decisively tilted the match in Zimbabwe`s favour. Nawaz is a cricketer of blossoming talent, although still inexperienced, and it can only be hoped that these traumatic events make him stronger.
