1. S. Arabia agrees to discuss extending term of $3bn loan

• Saudi Arabia on May 1, 2022 agreed to discuss extending the term of a $3 billion loan to help Pakistan`s new government tide over the prevailing economic crisis.
• Saudi Arabia affirmed its continuous support to Pakistan and its economy, including discussion of augmenting $3bn deposit with the central bank through term extension or otherwise, and exploring options to further enhance the financing of petroleum products and supporting the economic structural reforms for the benefit of Pakistan and its people.
• In a joint statement issued at the conclusion of three-day official visit of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to the kingdom, Islamabad and Riyadh said both sides supported the unity and independence of the countries of the region and their territorial integrity, as well as to give priority to political solutions that bring prosperity and progress to the region and its people


2. KP to celebrate Eid today, rest of country tomorrow

• While the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government decided to celebrate Eid ul Fitr on May 2, 2022 (today) following the announcement by an unofficial moon-sighting committee, the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee declared that the festivity would be celebrated on May 3, 2022 (tomorrow) as the Shawwal moon was not sighted anywhere in the country.
• Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee chairman Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, while announcing the decision at a press conference on Sunday after a meeting of the panel comprising clerics belonging to all the four mainstream sects in the country, said: `The sky has been largely clear across the country, yet no authentic testimony of the moon being sighted was received and, therefore, it was agreed with consensus that Eidul Fitr will be on May 3


3. Govt claims ending power cuts across country

• The Power Division on May 1, 2022 announced that it had ended power cuts across the country by injecting about 2,500MW additional electricity into the system.
• `In line with commitment of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, loadshedding has been brought to zero with effect from 05:00am on May 1,` said Power Minister Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan. However, in a tweet, he added, `There was zero loadshedding on feeders with better recovery`.
• The minister said more than 2,500MW had been added to the system. The ministry was striving for uninterrupted electricity during and after Eid, he said


4. Punjab cabinet formation put on hold till governor`s ouster

• Formation of a new provincial cabinet after Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hamza Shehbaz was sworn in as chief minister of Punjab is likely to be delayed till the removal of incumbent Governor Omar Sarfaraz Cheema, Dawn has learnt.
• A senior leader of the PML-N disclosed on May 1, 2022 that discussion to finalise the names for PML-N-led Punjab cabinet was under way, but the process might be delayed for a couple of weeks till the governor`s removal.
• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sent a summary for Mr Cheema`s removal to President Arif Alvi on April 16


5. In GB, hope evaporates as glaciers melt faster and faster

• With glaciers melting faster than before, Gilgit-Baltistan residents in some areas live under the constant threat of a natural disaster.
• Those living in downstream areas and near lakes and rivers are most vulnerable, particularly those near Shisper and Hoper glaciers.
• Glaciers in the Himalaya, Hindu Kush and Karakoram mountain ranges have melted rapidly, creating thousands of glacial lakes in the country`s northern areas.
• Around 30 of these lakes are at risk of sudden hazardous flooding, known as glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), the climate change ministry said earlier this week, adding that around seven million people were vulnerable
