1. Pakistan slaps ban on TikTok over `indecent content`

• After several warnings, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on October 9, 2020 placed a ban on TikTok in the country as different segments of society continued to complain against indecent/immoral short video sharing through the Chinese app.
• The telecom regulator issued instructions to relevant officials for blocking the application in the wake of the nature of content being consistently shared on TikTok and the subsequent complaints against it


2. PM welcomes Facebook investment in Pakistan

• Prime Minister Imran Khan and Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg on October 9, 2020 held a virtual meeting to discuss the social media giant`s investment in Pakistan and its support for digital literacy initiative and work to prevent Covid19 from spreading in the country and around the world.
• Prime Minister Khan welcomed Facebook`s investment and programmes in the country and encouraged its management to increase their footprint in the country.


3. Work on North-South gas pipeline to start in first quarter of 2021

• Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Petroleum, Nadeem Babar has said that physical work on a new trunk pipeline over 1100 km capable of 1.6bcfd transmission from the North to South of the country will begin in the 1st quarter of 2021.
• Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Petroleum, Nadeem Babar stated that this while talking in a virtual event hosted by US Pakistan Business Council hosted. US Pakistan Business Council Friday hosted a virtual event titled Explore Pakistan: A US Pakistan Business Council (USPBC) Virtual Series on Business Opportunities in Pakistan’s energy sector.


4. Pakistan supports Azerbaijan’s position on Nagorno-Karabakh, says CJCSC

• Pakistan on Friday said that the country fully supported Azerbaijan’s position on Nagorno-Karabakh, which is in line with the several unanimously-adopted United Nations Security Council resolutions.
• General Nadeem Raza, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), stated this during a meeting with Ali Alizada, Ambassador of Azerbaijan, who called on him at Joint Staff Headquarters in Rawalpindi.


5. Nobel Peace Prize goes to World Food Programme

• The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the World Food Programme on October 9, 2020 for feeding millions of people from Yemen to North Korea, as the coronavirus pandemic pushes millions more into hunger.
• The WFP was `a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict`, Nobel committee chairwoman Berit Reiss Andersen said on unveiling the winner in Oslo


6. China joins global Covid-19 vaccine alliance

• China, which has at least four coronavirus vaccine candidates in the last stage of clinical trials, said on October 9, 2020 it is joining an international initiative to distribute Covid-19 vaccines to countries worldwide known as COVAX, a move that may help the country find an international market for its coronavirus shots.
• The World Health Organisation, which also leads COVAX, welcomed the announcement, saying in a statement that the number of countries joining the COVAX facility grows every day, and we are pleased to see China formally join.


7. Singaporean jailed for 14 months in US for spying for China

• A Singaporean academic who recruited US officials to provide classified political and defence information to China was sentenced to 14 months in prison by a US court on October 9, 2020.
• Working with Chinese intelligence since 2015, Jun Wei Yeo, also called Dickson Yeo, set up a political consultancy in Washington which he used to identify Americans with high-level security clearances that he sought to pay for classified information.


8. Virus measures have left 2.7m migrants stranded: UN

• More than 2.7 million migrants who wished to return home have been stranded abroad because of restrictions put in place to fight the coronavirus pandemic, the United Nations said on October 9, 2020.
• The world needs to urgently step up cooperation to allow people to return in a safe manner despite the coronavirus constraints, said the UN`s International Organisation for Migration.
• The IOM warned in a report that border closures and travel bans had left large numbers of migrants stranded


9. Azerbaijan, Armenia begin talks over disputed region

• Armenia and Azerbaijan held their first high-level talks on October 9, 2020 after nearly two weeks of fierce clashes over the disputed Nagorno Karabakh region, with hopes rising that a ceasefire could be brokered in Moscow.
• Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who has repeatedly vowed to use his military to retake the breakaway province, said the talks represented a historic opportunity for Armenia.


10. Clashes in Kyrgyzstan as president says he`s ready to quit

• Two large crowds supporting rival politicians clashed in Kyrgyzstan`s capital Bishkek on October 9, 2020 as a power vacuum persisted and President Sooronbay Jeenbekov said he was ready to resign.
• The new clashes broke out after Jeenbekov imposed a state of emergency in the capital and said he would resign to end post-vote chaos.
• A disputed parliamentary election sparked a fresh crisis in the Central Asian country, triggering protests and unrest that have left at least one dead and more than 1,000 injured
