1. NADRA cancels ex-senator Hamdullah`s citizenship

• In a significant development, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has declared Jamiat Ulema-i-IslamFazl (JUI-F) leader, ex-minister and former senator Hafiz Hamdullah an alien, alleging that he had `fraudulently obtained` his computerised national identity card (CNIC) that has now been cancelled.
• `He is a confirmed Afghan and had used fraudulent means to get Pakistan`s citizenship,` said a senior official on October 26, 2019. His case had been `under scrutiny for years` though the decision was taken on a confirmation report from `sensitive agencies` that he was an alien, the official added.
• In his reaction, the JUI-F leader blamed state institutions for his `political victimisation` and said no one in his family, including his father, had ever been accused of being an alien.


2. Getting Pakistan out of FATF greylist: PM approves new strategy

• The Prime Minister, Imran Khan, formally approved a new strategy for implementation of 27 conditions of the Paris-based Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to get Pakistan out of its grey list.
• Imran chaired a high level meeting of the whole economic team as well as representatives of business community here on October 26, 2019. The prime minister congratulated the departments concerned and their staff over improved ranking of Pakistan in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business 2020 Study. The prime minister also postponed the implementation of ‘axle load’ for one year on the motorways to facilitate the business community. The business community was demanding the government to move towards axle load in a gradual manner, as its implementation had increased cost of transportation causing further slowdown in economic activities. Keeping in view this demand, the PM talked to the stakeholders and decided to waive implementation of the axle load for next one year


3. PM defers axle load policy for a year

• Prime Minister Imran Khan has asked the Frontier Works Organisation to defer the implementation of axle load condition in a move to appease the agitating traders protesting against the government`s documentation drive.
• Chairing a meeting of his economic team, the premier also tasked Finance Adviser Dr Hafeez Shaikh and Federal Board of Revenue Chairman Shabbar Zaidi to work out a better package for traders in consultation with the visiting International Monetary Fund (IMF).
• According to an official source, he asked Zaidi to meet with traders on Monday to further discuss their demands. `We will hold a meeting with the traders on Monday,` FBR chairman also confirmed to Dawn.


4. IMF mission due today to review release of second tranche

• The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has granted No Objection Certificate (NOC) for visiting IMF review mission to Pakistan for holding parleys under $6 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) from October 28 to November 11, 2019.
• Despite JUI-F Azadi March, Pakistani authorities convinced the IMF management to dispatch its staff review mission to Islamabad. After hectic consultation the IMF finally dispatched its team that would now reach Islamabad on October 27, 2019 (today). However, the talks will start from Monday (tomorrow) between the two sides.
• “The IMF’s headquarters in Washington DC has approved the dispatching of a review mission to Pakistan for the next two weeks.


5. Govt cancels registration of 4,693 NGOs for being inactive, violating rules

• The Sindh government has cancelled the registration of 4,693 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) all over the province for being inactive or grossly violating the rules prescribed by the government regarding their functioning.
• A notification to this effect was issued by the Sindh social welfare secretary, which stated that the government had rescinded the registration of 4,693 NGOs as they had either gone inactive or shown sheer negligence in duly observing the rules of the provincial government.
• The social welfare department took the decision to cancel the NGOs’ registration in pursuance of a decision of the Sindh cabinet taken in August this year.


6. Poet Ejaz Rehmani passes away

• Renowned poet and Naat Khwan Ejaz Rehmani on October 26, 2019 passed away in Karachi at the age of 83 following a prolonged illness.
• Syed Ejaz Ali Rehmani was born on 13 February 1936 in Aligarh. He was orphaned in his childhood, so he did not get proper education.
• Rehmani could only complete his elementary and religious education in Aligarh. “In 1954, he moved to Pakistan and passed the exams of Adeeb and Adeeb Fazil and became an employee at the Ibrahim Industry of Usmanabad, Karachi.”

7. Pentagon hands Microsoft $10bn `war cloud` deal, snubs Amazon

• The Pentagon awarded Microsoft a $10 billion cloud computing contract, snubbing early front-runner Amazon, whose competitive bid drew criticism from President Donald Trump and its business rivals.
• Bidding for the huge project, known as Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure, or JEDI, pitted leading tech titans Microsoft, Amazon, Oracle and IBM against one another.
• The giant contract has attracted more attention than most, sparked by speculation early in the process that Amazon would be the sole winner of the deal. Tech powerhouses Oracle and IBM pushed back with their own bids and also formally protested the bidding process last year.
• Oracle later challenged the process in federal court, but lost.


8. Britain`s Telegraph newspaper put up for sale

• The owners of Britain`s Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph have put them up for sale, a rival newspaper reported on October 26, 2019.
• According to The Times, the Barclay family is reviewing the ownership of all its holdings, including The Ritz hotel.
• The Barclays have owned the newspapers, which are close to Prime Minister Boris Johnson`s Conservative party and a champion of Britain`s EU exit, since 2004.
• Operating profits fell from 16.3 million in 2017 to 3.1 million last year, while revenues dropped from 278 million in 2017 to 271 million in 2018, according to The Times


9. $1.84 million diamond stolen from Japan jewellery fair

• Japanese police are investigating a 200 million yen ($1.84 million) diamond allegedly stolen from an international jewellery trade show near Tokyo.
• The 50-carat diamond was last seen sitting inside a glass showcase at 5pm on Thursday. An hour later, just after closing time, the diamond was gone and the jewellery case was unlocked, according to police.
• Police said on October 26, 2019 they suspect the alleged theft took place sometime in the final hour of the crowded exhibit at Yokohama, near Tokyo. The sparkly stone, exhibited by a company in Saitama, north of Tokyo, was the only item missing. Nobody has been arrested


10. Erdogan threatens to strike Kurdish YPG if Russia won`t

• Turkey will clear north-east Syria of Kurdish YPG militia if Russia does not fulfil its obligations under an accord that helped end a Turkish offensive in the region, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on October 26, 2019.
• Under the deal hammered out by Erdogan and Russia`s President Vladimir Putin, Russian military police and Syrian border guards are meant to clear the YPG fighters from within 30km of the border over a period of six days ending on Tuesday.
• From Tuesday, Russian and Turkish forces will start to patrol a narrower, 10km strip of land in northeast Syria.
• `If this area is not cleared from terrorists at the end of the 150 hours, then we will handle the situation by ourselves and will do all the cleansing work,` Erdogan said in a speech in Istanbul
