1. Nadra launches app for biometric verification

• Keeping pace with technological advancements, the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) on August 31, 2021 introduced an innovative application enabling people to use their smartphones for biometric verification.
• Talking to Dawn, Nadra chairman Tariq Malik said that by introducing the app, Pakistan has accelerated moving towards the digital identity lifecycle. `It is a game-changer as it helps create trust in a variety of transactions between people, identity providers, and public and private sector, he said.
• Prime Minister Imran Khan launched Nadra`s Pak-ID mobile application to facilitate applicants of National ID card using Pak-ID portal.


2. New curbs for unvaccinated people from today

• The government will be putting in place a number of restrictions on unvaccinated people from September 1, 2021 (today) as the country reported over 100 Covid-19 deaths for the fourth time in about three weeks.
• In another development, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) will begin vaccinating people over 17years of age and administering booster shots to those intending to travel abroad from Wednesday (today).
• On the other hand, a record number of over 1.4 million doses were given in a single day throughout the country


3. Rules of business for south Punjab secretariat approved

• As promised by Prime Minister Imran Khan, the Punjab government has taken practical step to solve problems of the people from the southern part of the province, said Chief Minister Usman Buzdar.
• Addressing a post-cabinet meeting press conference, Mr Buzdar said the meeting approved amendments to the Punjab Government Rules of Business 2011, empowering the bureaucracy in the south to solve people`s problems locally.
• The amendments clearly defined powers of the south Punjab additional chief secretary (ACS), secretaries and departments. The south side, the CM said, would include Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Khanewal, Layyah, Lodhran, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Rahim Yar Khan, Rajanpur and Vehari.


4. ECC okays Rs50bn cover for ADB`s $300m to be used for vaccine purchase

• The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet on August 31, 2021 approved Rs50.1bn local currency cover for $300 million financing from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for procurement of Covid-19 vaccine, Rs215m grant for local government elections of cantonment boards and $10m temporary funds for Roosevelt Hotel to meet emergency expenses.
• The ECC meeting presided over by Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin was attended by three other members of the 14-member body of the federal cabinet.
• The Aviation Division presented a summary requesting for provision of funds to clear emergency liabilities of the Roosevelt Hotel Corporation, including payment of local taxes and utilities. The PIA-IL requested the ECC to allow it to utilise $10m available with the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) to clear the immediate financially abilities.


5. Pakistan-Kazakhstan military drill concludes

• The closing ceremony of the Pakistan-Kazakhstan joint military exercise `Dostarym III` was held at the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Pabbi, on August 31, 2021.
• According to a press release of the Inter-Services Public Relations, the exercise was aimed to develop, strengthen and bolster military cooperation between the two countries in the face of emerging counterterrorism and counterinsurgency domains.
• Special Forces of both the countries took part in hostage and rescue, compound clearance, heli rappelling and close qtr battle (CQB) and exchanged the first-hand experience and ideas. The exercise focused on integrated synergy, interloper ability, quick decision making and swift action at tactical level. The exercise furthered reinforce the mutual cooperation and understanding between the two states to effectively counter the threats


6. Pakistani microfinance pioneer wins Magsaysay award

• A Pakistani microfinance pioneer, a Bangladeshi scientist who helped develop a cheap oral vaccine against cholera, and a Filipino fisherman were among August 31, 2021`s winners of Asia`s equivalent to the Nobel Prize.
• Pakistani development worker Mohammad Amjad Saqib, 64, was a winner for his first-of-its-kind interest and collateral-free microfinance programme that has helped millions of poor f amilies.
• Nearly two decades after its launch, Akhuwat has grown into the nation`s largest microfinance institution, distributing the equivalent of $900 million and boasting an almost 100 per cent loan repayment rate, the award foundation said


7. Don`t blame Pakistan for Kabul`s fall, US told

• It was not Pakistan`s military strategy but Afghanistan`s internal problems that caused the collapse of the former Afghan government, argues Islamabad`s US ambassador Asad Majeed Khan.
• Last week, Republican Congressman Michael G.
• Waltz sent a letter to US President Joe Biden, urging him to sanction Pakistan for its alleged support to Taliban militants who, according to Mr Waltz, captured Kabul with Islamabad`s support.


8. Drone attack on Saudi airport wounds eight, damages plane

• A bomb-laden drone on August 31, 2021 crashed into an airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia, wounding eight people and damaging a civilian plane, Saudi state television reported, the latest assault on the kingdom amid its grinding war in neighboring Yemen.
• The Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen blamed the assault on Yemen`s Iran-backed Houthi rebels, saying it was the second such strike on Abha airport in the last 24 hours.
• An earlier ballistic missile attack scattered shrapnel across the tarmac but caused no casualties. The Houthis did not claim responsibility for the strikes and its military spokesman did not answer calls seeking comment


9. Biden blames Afghan army, Trump for messy exit

• President Joe Biden on August 31, 2021 rejected criticism of his decision to stick to a deadline to pull out of Afghanistan this week, a move that left 100 to 200 Americans in the country along with thousands of US-aligned Afghan citizens.
• In a televised address from the White House state dining room, Biden criticised the ousted Afghan government`s inability to fight back against swift Taliban advances, which forced the United States and its Nato allies into a hasty and humiliating exit, and highlighted the role played by former president Donald Trump.
• The deal brokered by Trump authorised `the release of 5,000 prisoners last year, including some of the Taliban`s top war commanders, among those who just took control`, Biden said.


10. US suspends diplomatic presence in Kabul, to conduct ties `from distance`

• The United States on August 31, 2021 decided to maintain diplomatic relations with Afghanistan even though it`s now controlled by its former arch enemy, the Taliban but will no longer have any personnel on the ground.
• `We have suspended our diplomatic presence in Kabul, and transferred our operations to Doha, Qatar, which will soon be formally notified to Congress,` US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced.
• `A new chapter of America`s engagement with Afghanistan has begun. It`s one in which we will lead with our diplomacy,` he said in a speech broadcast live from his office.
