6. Japanese govt agrees to defer $160m debt

• The governments of Japan and Pakistan have agreed on a debt deferral amounting to $160 million as the third and last phase of the `G20 Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI)`.
• The total amount of deferred debt has now reached $730m, which will provide the fiscal space for the Pakistan government to restore its economy affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and the floods, the Japanese embassy announced on Wednesday.
• Prior to this, both governments had agreed to the first debt deferral amounting to $370m in April 2021 and the second debt deferral amounting to $200m on October 2021, under the DSSI initiative


7. 27 Al Shabaab fighters killed in US strike

• The US military said on Wednesday it had killed 27 fighters from the Al Shabaab militant group in an air strike in Somalia`s central Hiran region, where the army and allied forces have launched an offensive against the insurgents in the last month.
• The United States has been carrying out air strikes in Somalia against Al Shabaab, an Al Qaeda franchise, for years. Sunday`s strike was the sixth recorded in 2022.
• In Hiran region residents say Al Shabaab`s torching of houses, destruction of wells and killing of civilians, combined with demands for taxes amidst the worst drought in 40 years, has pushed locals to form paramilitary groups to fight alongside the government


8. India must reverse all illegal measures, says OIC group

• The OIC Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir at the United Nations demanded on September 21, 2022 that India must reverse all illegal and unilateral measures it took on or after Aug 5, 2019.
• OIC Secretary General Hissein Brahim Taha chaired the meeting.
• On August 5, 2019, India forcibly annexed illegally occupied territories of Jammu and Kashmir, rescinding a special status granted by the Indian constitution


9. Turkiye sells 20 armed drones to UAE

• Turkish defence firm Baykar has delivered 20 armed drones to the United Arab Emirates this month and could sell more, two Turkish sources said, as a diplomatic detente between the former regional rivals expands into military contracts.
• International demand for Baykar`s drones soared after their impact on conflicts in Syria, Ukraine and Libya, where their laser-guided armour-piercing bombs helped repel an offensive by UAE-supported forces two years ago.
• That civil war in Libya was one of several theatres where the two countries played out a bitter, decade long battle for influence in the Middle East, until a reconciliation last year


10. Raisi says Iran not seeking nuclear weapons

• Iran`s president told the United Nations on September 21, 2022 that his country was not seeking an atomic weapon and demanded US guarantee it would abide by any revived nuclear deal.
• `The Islamic Republic of Iran is not seeking to build or obtain nuclear weapons and such weapons have no place in our doctrine, President Ebrahim Raisi told the UN General Assembly.
• Raisi addressed the world body just hours before US President Joe Biden was set to take the stage, amid a surge of tension over an Iran nuclear deal that remains blocked despite months of negotiations, and mounting pressure over the country`s human rights record
