1. Virgin Islands court resumes hearing on Reko Dig award

• As the High Court of Justice in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) resumes on January 7, 2021 (today) hearing of a case relating to enforcement of a $5.97 billion award against Pakistan, Islamabad is hopeful that its legal team will ensure that no further adverse effect takes place against the country.
• `The government of Pakistan has engaged a team of lawyers from the international firms and will definitely contest the case to ensure that no further adverse effect takes place against our institutions and its properties,` said a highly placed source privy to the development.


2. Islamabad gets new IGP

• The federal government on January 7, 2021 changed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Aamir Zulfiqar Khan and appointed Qazi Jamilur Rehman in his place.
• As per the notification: `Muhammad Aamir Zulfiqar Khan, an Officer of BS-21 of Police Service of Pakistan, presently posted as Inspector General, Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Police, under the Interior Division is transferred and directed to report to the Establishment Division with immediate effect and until further orders

4. Pakistan, South Korea hold third round of online session of JTC

• The third round of Joint Trade Committee (JTC) online session was held between the Ministry of Commerce (MoC), Pakistan, and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), South Korea, on Wednesday to discuss bilateral issues.
• Both delegations emphasised to expand the bilateral trade and investment linkages between the two countries. The Korean head raised the corporate issues faced by Korean companies in Pakistan and requested to resolve the issues accordingly


5. Amnesty calls on Israel to give virus vaccine to Palestinians

• Amnesty International on January 6, 2021 called on Israel to provide coronavirus vaccine doses to Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza, saying the Jewish state was obligated to do so under international law.
• The Palestinian Authority (PA) in the West Bank, which is home to some 2.8 million Palestinians, has not publicly asked for Israeli assistance in vaccine procurement.
• Hamas Islamists, who control the Gaza strip, where about two million Palestinians live, are highly unlikely to publicly coordinate with Israel in any vaccination effort.

8. Ex-Goldman Sachs banker nominated as next BBC chair

• The British government on January 6, 2021 unveiled former Goldman Sachs banker Richard Sharp as its nomination to be the next chairman of the BBC.
• Sharp, also an ex-chair of the Royal Academy of Arts, has a background in public service and was selected following “an open and rigorous competition”, it said.
• He is set to succeed David Clementi, a former deputy governor of the Bank of England who took up the role in 2017, next month

• The win in Christchurch, which completed a 2-0 series sweep, also confirmed New Zealand had overtaken Australia to be the world`s number one Test side for the first time
