1. Pakistan loses four points on graft perception ranking

• Pakistan has been ranked 124 out of 180 countries in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2020 released on January 28, 2021 by the Transparency International, as the country`s score has lowered to 31 from 32 out of 100 from the last year.
• Pakistan`s ranking in 2019 was 120 among 180 countries and its rise to 124 indicates that the perception of corruption in the public sector has slightly worsened.
• The country has also scored less than last year in two categories, Rule of Law Index and Varieties of Democracy, due to which Pakistan`s score in CPI 2020hasbeenreducedbyone


2. SC orders release of man accused of murdering Pearl

• By a majority of two to one, the Supreme Court acquitted on January 28, 2021 Ahmed Omer Saeed Sheikh, the principal accused in murder of Wall Street Journal`s bureau chief for South Asia Daniel Pearl, by extending the benefit of the doubt to him.
• Headed by Justice Mushir Alam, a three-judge Supreme Court bench also comprising Justice Sardar Tariq Masood and Justice Yahya Afridi ordered that Mr Sheikh, Fahad Naseem Ahmed, Syed Salman Saqib and Shaikh Muhammad Adil be set free forth with, if not required to be detained in connection with any other case. The detailed reasons for the judgement will come later


3. Jordanian CJCS honoured by president

• President Dr Arif Alvi conferred Hilali-Imtiaz (Military) on the Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff of Jordanian Armed Forces, Maj Gen Yousef Ahmad Al-Hnaity, on January 28, 2021.
• The award was conferred on Maj Gen Al-Hnaity in recognition of his illustrious services for promoting defence cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries.


4. NA body passes bill for open balloting in Senate election

• The National Assembly Standing Committee on Law and Justice on January 28, 2021 passed the bill for open balloting in the Senate Election.
• The meeting of the Standing Committee on Law and Justice was held under the chairmanship of Riaz Fatyana.
• The committee in its less than half an hour meeting, considered the bill: `The Constitution (Twenty Sixth Amendment) Bill, 2020` and recommended with majority that the bill may be passed by the National Assembly


5. ADB to provide $5.4bn assistance to Pakistan in three years

• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide about $5.4 billion assistance to Pakistan over the next three years.
• This is part of the ADB`s five-year Country Partnership Strategy (CPS).
• `The indicative resources available for commitment during the first three years of the CPS period (2021-2023) total $5.4bn,` said the ADB on January 28, 2021. This include $3.6bn for regular OCR (ordinary capital resource) lending and $1.8bn for concessional OCR lending


6. Ex-KE MD made head of reconstituted NTDC board

• The government on January 28, 2021 reconstituted the board of directors of the National Transmission & Dispatch Company (NTDC) under the chairmanship of former managing director of K-Electric Naveed Ismail.
• According to a notification issued by the Power Division, seven out of 11 members of the existing board have been replaced. All the independent directors are new faces on the board whose number has been reduced from six to five


7. Pakistan to stop manual visas from next month

• Pakistan will stop issuing manual visas from next month and has asked non-resident Pakistanis and others interested in travelling to the country to apply online for electronic or e-visas.
• `In compliance with the instructions of the government of Pakistan for complete implementation of E-visa regime, Embassy of Pakistan and its consulates across the United States will stop the issuance of manual visa from Feb 1, 2021,` said a notification issued by the Pakistan Embassy in Washington on January 28, 2021


8. Blast in Afghanistan kills Mangal Bagh

• Chief of one of Khyber district`s most dreaded and banned organisations, Lashkar-i-Islam (LI), Mangal Bagh was killed in a mine explosion in Nangarhar province of Afghanistan on January 28, 2021.
• Confirming the news of the militant leader`s death, Nangarhar`s Governor Ziaul-Haq Amarkhel wrote on his Twitter account:`Mangal Bagh, also known as Mangal Bagh Afridi, the leader of Lashkar-i-Islam, a militant organisation operating in (erstwhile) Khyber Agency, has been killed in a roadside explosion in Achin district along with three others


9. Russia`s population shrinks to 146.2m

• The Russian population shrank by more than half a million over the past 12 months, the steepest fall since the mid-2000s, official data showed on January 28, 2021.
• As of January 1, 2021, the Russian population numbered 146.2 million, 510,000 fewer than the previous year and the sharpest decline in 15 years, the national statistics office Rosst at calculated.


10. UK judge allows extradition of Abraaj founder to US

• A year-and-a-half after the arrest of the founder of collapsed private equity firm Abraaj, Arif Naqvi,in London, a magistrate`s court ruled in favour of United States prosecutors who sought his extradition.
• The US Department of Justice has indicted Arif Naqvi in a range of offences, including defrauding investors and money laundering. If found guilty of all charges, he could be sentenced to up to 291 years in a US prison
