1. Pakistan secures 17 million doses of AstraZeneca

• With a special plane expected to depart for China in the next 48 hours to bring the first tranche of Sinopharm`s Covid-19 vaccine, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan announced that around seven million doses of AstraZeneca would also reach Pakistan in the first quarterofthe currentyear.
• In his tweet, the prime minister`s aide said: `Happy to share that in addition to the 500,000 doses of Sinopharm, almost 7 million doses of AstraZeneca to be made available in Q1 and given to the public free of cost! Pakistan`s vaccine drive starts next week, beginning with frontline healthcare workers


2. T-054 A/P frigate for Pak Navy launched in China

• The launching ceremony of 2nd ship of Type-054 Class Frigate constructed for Pakistan Navy was held at Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard Shanghai, China.
• The ceremony was graced by Commodore Azfar Humayun (Chief Naval Overseer, China) as chief guest, said a Pakistan Navy press release received on January 30, 2021


3. All schools, universities to reopen Monday

• Federal Minister for Education and Professional Trainings and National Heritage and Culture Shafqat Mahmood January 30, 2021 said all primary schools and universities would start classes from February 1, 2021.
• While talking to reporters in Sukkur during his visit to the tomb of Mir Masoom Shah Minaret, a Mughal era’s monument, the minister said that the country had witnessed “too much loss of education” due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
• Shafqat Mahmood said that education played a crucial role in the economic development and growth of a country. He underlined the need of using technology as it was crucial to ensure quality education


4. Pakistan to work with US as partner for peace

• Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said January 30, 2021 that Pakistan desires peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
• While addressing a press conference here, he said that in his telephonic conversation with the US Secretary of State Antony J Blinklen, he had discussed bilateral ties and Afghan Peace Process, emphasising that the priorities of newly elected US President and Prime Minister Imran Khan are same


5. Punjab to launch typhoid vaccine drive from February 1, 2021

• The Punjab government will launch a 15-day Typhoid Conjugated Vaccine (TCV) campaign in the province from tomorrow (February 1, 2021) and children in the age group of 9 months to 15 years will be vaccinated.
• Punjab Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department (P&SHD) Secretary Captain (retired), M Usman told mediamen on Saturday that in the first phase, 12 out of 36 districts had been selected for the vaccination programme.


6. UAE amends law to grant citizenship to investors, professionals

• The United Arab Emirates has adopted amendments that would allow the Gulf state to grant citizenship to investors and other professionals, including scientists, doctors and their families, the government said on January 30, 2021.
• `The UAE cabinet, local Emiri courts and executive councils will nominate those eligible for the citizenship under clear criteria set for each category,` Dubai`s ruler and UAE Vice President Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said in a Twitter post


7. India cuts Internet near Delhi as hundreds of farmers begin hunger strike

• India blocked mobile internet services in several areas around New Delhi on January 30, 2021 as protesting farmers began a one day hunger strike after a week of clashes with authorities that left one dead and hundreds injured.
• Angry at new agricultural laws that they say benefit large private food buyers at the expense of producers, tens of thousands of farmers have been camped at protest sites on the outskirts of the capital for more than two months


8. Galaxy dying out as it loses ability to form stars

• Galaxies begin to “die” when they stop forming stars, but until now astronomers had never clearly glimpsed the start of this process in a far-away galaxy.
• Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), in which the European Southern Observatory (ESO) is a partner, astronomers have seen a galaxy ejecting nearly half of its star-forming gas.
• This ejection is happening at a startling rate, equivalent to 10,000 Suns-worth of gas a year — the galaxy is rapidly losing its fuel to make new stars.


9. Educationist Qazi Jamil dies of Covid-19

• Renowned poet, journalist and educationist Prof Qazi Jamil died of coronavirus on January 29, 2021. He was 71.
• Qazi Jamil was admitted to the coronavirus ward of the Haripur District Headquarters Hospital about two weeks ago when his condition worsened. He remained on ventilator for over a week but could not survive and breathed his last on Friday night.


10. Veteran film star Neelo passes away

• Veteran Pakistani film actress Neelo died in hospital on January 30, 2021. She was 81.
• Neelo was admitted to a private hospital three weeks ago due to some ailments.
• She was born as Cynthia Alexander Fernandes in Bhera city of Sargodha district on June 3,1940.
• Neelo is the only Pakistani actress to have worked in a popular Hollywood film, `Bhowani Junction` starring Ava Gardner and Stewart Granger, which also marked her film debut
