6. WB tells govt to stop funding devolved subjects

• The World Bank has suggested a number of measures to address Pakistan`s chronic fiscal deficits, including a cut to the funding of projects that now fell within the provinces`domain.
• Briefing journalists, the World Bank`s senior macroeconomist Derek Chen said the federal government was still spending around Rs328bn every year on federal ministries devolved to the provinces around15yearsago.
• `This is a duplication of task,` he said, adding that the devolution process should have been completed at the earliest.
• Let the provinces invest and develop health, sports, education and similar other areas so that the federal government could take care of its core responsibilities, Mr Chen added

7. Indian opposition decries `purging` of schoolbook

• Indian opposition parties on Wednesday condemned the removal from some schoolbooks of references to how independence hero Mahatma Gandhi`s pursuit of Hindu-Muslim unity angered some Hindu extremists and led to his assassination.
• The new edition of a political science book for 17-18 year olds, published by the autonomous National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), also removed a reference to a year-long ban on the Hindu group Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) after Gandhi was assassinated in 1948 by a Hindu hardliner, Nathuram Godse.
• The RSS is the ideological parent of Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). NCERT`s director said the changes had been recommended by an expert committee


8. Russia detains Ukrainian pilot

• Russia`s FSB security service said on April 6, 2023 it detained a pilot of a Ukrainian light aircraft that crashed in the southern Bryansk region, which borders Ukraine, Russian state media said.
• `The aircraft, for unknown reasons, crashed near the settlement of Butovsk in Bryansk region. The pilot (a citizen of Ukraine), who tried to escape to Ukrainian territory, was detained by a border patrol,` the FSB was quoted as saying by state news agency RIA Novosti


9. When in Beijing Macron warns against shunning China

• French President Emmanuel Macron said Europe must resist reducing trade and diplomatic ties with China as he began a state visit on April 5, 2023, seeking to refute any sense there was an `inescapable spiral` of tension between Beijing and the West.
• Macron said maintaining dialogue with China was key given its close relations with Russia, which is waging a war in Ukraine. Asked about Western concerns Beijing might be considering sending arms to Moscow, Macron said any nation that did so would be complicit in a breach of international law.
• `China`s interest isn`t to have a lasting war,` Macron said

• Aleksander Ceferin was re-elected unopposed for a third term of four years as president of UEFA at a meeting of European football`s governing body in Lisbon on April 5, 2023.
• The 55-year-old Slovenian lawyer, first elected in 2016 following the downfall of Frenchman Michel Platini, will now remain in the role until 2027.
• `I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your unanimous support. It really means a lot to me,` Ceferin told delegates at the UEFA Congress in the Portuguese capital. `It is a great honour but mainly it is a great, great responsibility, towards you and towards football.` The UEFA Congress came just a few weeks after Gianni Infantino was re-elected as president of the sport`s world governing body FIFA, also unopposed
