6. PMDC made functional with appointment of board members

• Eight members of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), the body regulating medical institutions and professionals, were notified on April 11, 2023, making it functional.
• The members were notified by the Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination(MNHSRC), after the approval of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, according to a notification available with Dawn.
• The appointments have been made for four years on the recommendations of a search committee, the notification added.
• Under the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council Act, 2022, the PMDC will have 15 members. Eight of them are appointed at the prime minister`s discretion

7. Air strikes kill several in central Myanmar

• A number of people in coup-hit Myanmar`s central region were killed in air strikes on April 11, 2023, according to local media reports.
• The country has been in chaos and its economy in tatters since the military seized power in February 2021.
• The death toll from the early on Tuesday morning strike on the remote Kantbalu township in Sagaing region is unclear.
• At least 50 fatalities and dozens wounded were reported by BBC Burmese, The Irrawaddy and Radio Free Asia.
• Sagaing region near the second-largest city Mandalay has put up some of the fiercest resistance to the military`s rule, with intense fighting raging there for months


8. UN says forced into `appalling choice` by Taliban ban on women

• The United Nations is being forced to make an `appalling choice` over whether to continue operations in Afghanistan while the Taliban government bans women from working for the organIsation, the world body said on April 11, 2023.
• Taliban authorities have imposed a slew of restrictions on Afghan women since seizing power in 2021, including banning them from higher education and many government jobs.
• In December, they banned Afghan women from working for domestic and foreign non-governmental organisations, and on April 4 extended that to UN offices across the country


9. Taiwan detects Chinese warships, planes around island after drills end

• Chinese warships and aircraft were still operating around Taiwan on April 11, 2023, the island`s defence ministry said, a day after Beijing declared an end to its massive war games.
• China launched three days of military exercises around self-ruled Taiwan on Saturday that saw it simulate targeted strikes and practise a blockade of the island.
• The show of force from Beijing, which claims the island as part of its territory, was a response to Taiwan President Tsai Ingwen`s meeting with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy last week, an encounter it had warned would provoke retaliatory measures


10. IAF captain dismissed for downing own chopper in Feb 2019

• A General Court Martial (GCM) in India has ordered the dismissal of an Indian Air Force (IAF) group captain for a friendly missile attack on an Mi-17 helicopter in February 2019, reported on April 11, 2023.
• According to a report, the GCM ordered the dismissal of group captain Suman Roy Chowdhury, who was the chief operations officer of the IAF at the Srinagar Air Force station at the time of the friendly missile attack.
• The report said that Chowdhury was held guilty on five of the nine charges, including not obeying the order issued by the air headquarters. He was also held guilty of assigning an inbound flying object to the missile unit on Feb 27, 2019.`As a consequence, the assigned flying target, which actually was friendly copter Mi-17, was shot down,` the report said
