6. GB to cut special power supply lines for govt offices

• As locals face up to 18-hour-long power outages, the Gilgit Baltistan government has started an operation to remove illegal electricity connections and special transmission lines to government offices and official residences.
• The GB water and power department, in collaboration with district administrations, has started the action from Sunday to overcome the power shortage.
• GB Chief Secretary Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani said government officers, including himself, have been provided with special power transmission lines to ensure 24-hour electricity supply to their offices and houses while the public was facing 18 to 20 hours of load shedding


7. ADB extends $20.5bn to support recovery

• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) committed $20.5 billion from its resources in 2022 to help Asia and the Pacific continue their recovery from the pandemic despite fresh economic headwinds and crises.
• The $20.5bn comprised loans and guarantees, grants, equity investments, and technical assistance provided to governments and the private sector.
• ADB mobilised an additional $11.4bn in co-financing, according to the financial and operational results published on Monday in the bank`s Annual Report 2022


8. Bangladesh swears in new president ahead of election

• DHAKA: Mohammed Shahabuddin, a former judge and a ruling party official, was sworn in as the president of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023, just months before a general election.
• Shahabuddin, 73, was an anti-corruption commissioner and reportedly `fought in the country`s 1971 war of independence`, the presidential palace said. `He was sworn in as the 22nd president of the People`s Republic of Bangladesh today,` Shampad Barua, secretary of the president, said.
• He was elected by lawmakers in February after the ruling Awami League party nominated him instead of the speaker of parliament, who had been seen as the favourite. Shahabuddin replaces Abdul Hamid, a former speaker and Awami League stalwart, whose second term expired on Monday.


9. Chapman`s hundred stuns Pakistan as NZ square series

• Victory, and a series win, felt within grasp for Pakistan but New Zealand and Mark Chapman had other ideas.
• The left-handed Chapman smashed a magnificent 104 not out off 57 balls, hitting four sixes and 11 fours, launching a blistering counterattack to deliver a six-wicket victory for New Zealand as the Black Caps finish the five-match series level at 2-2.
• Pakistan were 2-0 up after the opening two games but New Zealand hit back when they edged a cliffhanger in the third match and after the fourth game was washed out, Chapman proved to be a thorn in hosts` ambitions


10. Ex-speaker Zahoor Khosa dies

• Former speaker of Balochistan Assembly Mir Zahoor Hussain Khosa died after prolonged illness. He was 77.
• Family sources said that Mr Khosa was suffering from cancer for quite long and was under treatment in a Karachi hospital. His body was brought to Sohbatpur area of Nasirabad division and buried in his native village Mir Hassan.
• A large number of people, including provincial ministers, MPAs, tribal elders and political workers attended the funeral
