1. 23 minors among 54 lives lost in Bajaur blast

• The so-called Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) group on July 31, 2023 claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing at a JUI-F political gathering, as the toll from the tragedy rose to 54, including 23 minors.
• According to Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Additional Inspector General Shaukat Abbas, at least 83 people were hurt in the attack, while Dr Naseeb Gul of Khar DHQ hospital feared that the toll might rise further, since some of the injured were still in very critical condition


2. CPEC moves into second phase with `simple` celebration

• China and Pakistan decided to accelerate the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, hailing the progress on development initiatives in the decade since the project`s launch in 2013.
• In a special ceremony held to commemorate 10 years of CPEC on Monday, six new documents were signed for joint cooperation. The celebrations, however, were kept simple out of respect for the victims of the Bajaur terrorist attack

3. PM okays extension of national power policy to GB

• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the extension of the National Power Policy to Gilgit-Baltistan and extend the jurisdiction of institutions concerned to the region, according to a press release issued by GB Chief Secretary Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani.
• A summary was moved by the advisor to the PM on Kashmir Affairs and GB at the request of the GB government which has been approved by the prime minister.
• He has issued directives to the relevant ministries to forward a summary to the president for approval, said the statement released on July 31, 2023


4. Zubair Tiwana becomes new FBR chairman

• The Federal Board of Revenue has appointed Malik Amjad Zubair Tiwana, an officer of the Inland Revenue Service, as the new chairman of FBR, an official source told.
• Currently posted as a member operation of IRS, Mr Tiwana was made the new chairman of FBR by the federal cabinet through a circulation summary.
• A formal notification for Mr Tiwana`s appointment is likely to be issued on Tuesday


5. SBP keeps policy rate steady at 22pc

• Amid expectations of further deceleration in average inflation to 20-22 per cent with an economic growth projection of 2-3pc for FY24, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has left its policy rate unchanged at 22pc for next two months.
• SBP Governor Jameel Ahmed announced the decision at a press conference on July 31, 2023.
• Most of the analysts were expecting no change in the interest rate which is too high and hampering economic activities
