1. Agencies get sweeping powers to raid, detain

• The outgoing government on August 01 quietly got a bill to amend the century old secrets act approved by the National Assembly in a bid to grant blanket powers to intelligence agencies, which will be able to raid and detain any citizen, even under suspicion of them breaching the law.
• The bill seeking to amend the Official Secrets Act 1923 was tabled in the National Assembly by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Murtaza Javed Abbasi through a supplementary agenda on private members` day and it was passed on the same day


2. NA passes bill for formation of `self-sufficient` Gandhara authority

• The National Assembly on August 1, 2023 approved a bill for the establishment of the `Promotion and Protection of Gandhara Culture Authority Act 2023` to preserve and promote Buddhist sites and tourism.
• The proposed authority is the continuation of the `International Gandhara Symposium` recently organised by the government participated by key Buddhist religious figures from many countries


3. Senate aviation body okays two bills

• The Senate Standing Committee on Aviation has approved two bills to outsource the airports and improve investigation mechanism regarding aviation accidents.
• The bills titled Pakistan Civil Aviation Bill, 2023 and Pakistan Air Safety Investigation Bill, 2023 were presented by Federal Minister for Aviation Khawaja Saad Rafiq.
• The committee meeting, chaired by Senator Hidayatullah, reviewed the bills and approved them with amendments tabled by the members


4. Counter-terrorism approach should evolve in line with threat: US official

• As Pakistan grapples with an increase in militant attacks seemingly emanating from across the border, a top White House National Security official has called the threat `more ideologically diverse and geographically diffuse`, underscoring the need for keeping pace with the threat level.
• `More broadly, today`s terrorist threat is more ideologically diverse and geographically diffuse than that of two decades ago. Al-Qaeda, ISIS and associated forces have expanded from Afghanistan and the Middle East into Africa, the rest of South Asia, and Southeast Asia. As the threat evolves, so too must our counter-terrorism approach,` Senior Director for South Asia, National Security Council, Eileen Laubacher, told Dawn during her recent visit to Pakistan.


5. US assures Pakistan of unwavering economic support

• The United States said on Tuesday that it would continue its `unwavering support` to Pakistan`s efforts to overcome the economic crisis but also urged it to watch its interests carefully.
• Responding to a question about the Chinese vice premier`s visit to Islamabad for talks on the CPEC at a State Department news briefing, Spokesman Matthew Miller said: `I would say that first of all our support for Pakistan`s economic is unwavering and we will continue to engage with Pakistan about strengthening and our trade and investment ties

6. 385 Pakistanis freed from traffickers` warehouse in Libya

• At least 385 Pakistani migrants, held in human traffickers` warehouses, have been freed in a law enforcement raid near the coastal city of Tobruk, in northeastern Libya.
• The Associated Press reported on Tuesday that the Pakistani nationals were released early on Monday from smugglers` warehouses in the Al Khueir area, south of Tobruk.
• According to Al-Abreen, a migrants` rights group based in the Tobruk, there are at least 11 children among the freed, some less than 10 years old


7. Five dead as communal violence flares in Haryana

• At least five people have been killed and at least 70 others, including several policemen, are hurt following violent clashes between Hindus and Muslims in the Indian state of Haryana.
• Following the violence, a curfew has been imposed and internet services suspended in the Muslim-majority area of Nuh, 50km south of the Indian capital of New Delhi. A ban on assembly of people has been imposed while schools and colleges have been closed as well.
• The violence reportedly flared after a crowd in Nuh tried to stop a Bajrang DalVishva Hindu Parishad procession, The Wire reported.


8. US, Chinese officials meet in Washington amid diplomatic thaw

• The top American diplomat for east Asia and the Pacific region held a `candid, substantive, and productive discussion` with his Chinese counterpart in Washington on Monday, the US State Department said.
• Yang Tao, director general of the Chinese Foreign Ministry`s North American and Oceanian Affairs Department, was hosted at State Department headquarters by US Assistant Secretary of State Daniel J.
• Kritenbrink and Sarah Beran, National Security Council Senior Director for China and Taiwan Affairs


9. Saudi Arabia okays $1.2bn aid for Yemen

• Saudi Arabia, which has led a years-long military coalition in Yemen, announced on Tuesday a $1.2 billion grant for the war-scarred country`s internationally recognised government, the latest attempt to prop up its economy.
• The money will help the government address its budget deficit and also fund salaries for civil servants and `support for ensuring food security`, the official Saudi Press Agency said


10. Drone hits tower housing Russian ministries

• A high-rise building in Moscow`s business district that houses three Russian government ministries was struck by a drone for the second time in three days on August 01, 2023, in what Russia called an attempted Ukrainian `terrorist attack`.
• A Ukrainian presidential adviser said Moscow should expect more drone attacks and `more war`
