1. SC seeks full record of May 9 arrests after Isa `rises` from bench

• Courtroom No.1 of the Supreme Court was left stunned on June 22, 2023, with bitter polarisation among judges coming to the fore, after Chief Justice designate Qazi Faez Isa said he did not consider the nine-member bench hearing appeals against military trials `a proper court`.
• `I am not recusing (withdrawing) myself but I will not sit either and therefore [I am] rising,` observed Justice Isa. When Justice Isa stood up from his seat on the bench, everyone, even a visibly-disturbed Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial seated next to him, asked Justice Isa to remain seated.
• At the outset of the hearing, Justice 1sa asked Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan to come to the rostrum and observed that Article 175(2) of the Constitution gives the courts the right to hear and that the oath expects from the judges to decide matters in accordance with the law


2. PM presses West to be `fair` to needy countries

• Developed countries should distribute resources fairly to help mitigate the suffering of developing nations and ensure world peace, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told a gathering of some 40 world leaders in Paris on June 22, 2023, at a summit aimed at charting a fresh approach to tackling poverty and climate change.
• The two-day New Global Financial Pact Summit, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, seeks to improve the lending system for developing countries.
• It comes amid growing recognition of the scale of the financial challenges ahead, with warnings that the world`s ability to curb global warming at tolerable levels relies on a massive increase in clean energy investment in developing nations

3. CM takes over three portfolios; ministers get additional task

• Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi has taken over the portfolios of communication and works (C&W), excise taxation & narcotics control (ET&NC) as well as local government and community development (LG&CD) stripping the ministers of these portfolios.
• These portfolios will now remain under the direct control of Mr Naqvi.
• The C&W and ET&NC portfolios had been assigned to minister Bilal Afzal, while the LG&CD was given to minister Ibrahim Murad since the cabinet was formed.
• In the new arrangement, Mr Afzal has been assigned the portfolios of planning and development (P&D), environment protection as well as forest, wildlife and fisheries


4. Cabinet rejects proposal for agri tax on five-acre land

• The Punjab caretaker cabinet on June 22, 2023 rejected the proposal to impose agricultural income tax on owners of five-acre land.
• The 18th provincial cabinet meeting, presided over by Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, decided to maintain the stamp duty rate at one per cent and approved amendments to the First Schedule of the Stamp Act 1899. Amendments to the Sales Tax on Services Act, 2012 were also approved, abolishing all taxes and duties on IT business, education, and training in Punjab.
• The cabinet approved the extension of contracts for employees of the hepatitis and infection control programme, as well as the provincial TB control programme


5. Iranian team arrives to discuss borders, counter-terrorism

• A high-level delegation from Iran arrived on June 22, 2023 to participate in the 10th IranPakistan Special Security Committee (IPSSC) meeting to discuss counter-terrorism measures, border management strategies and issues of mutual interest.
• According to a statement issued by the Iranian Embassy on Thursday, Seyed Majid Mirahmadi, Deputy Minister of Interior of Iran, arrived here, leading a delegation of Iran officials to participate in the IPSSC meeting.
• The meeting indicates pragmatic determination of officials of the two brotherly countries to promote bilateral cooperation in realising common interests as well as dealing with the common threats and challenges, including terrorism and security issues at the common border, the statement said.
• On June 20, the Senate Standing Committee on Defence stressed the need for peaceful conditions on the country`s western borders for secure and safe trade with Iran and Afghanistan
