1. Pakistan`s political turmoil echoes in US Congress

• Pakistan`s political crisis echoed in the US House of Representatives on Friday night when a senior member of the Foreign Affairs Committee highlighted the need for the United States to side with democracy and not with the leaders more pliable to Washington.
• On April 29, 2023, Congressman Brad Sherman, a record 13th-time member of the House from California and an influential member of the ruling Democratic Party, also put his speech on his official Twitter site.
• `I would like to address recent events in Pakistan,` he told the House Speaker, raising the current political dispute, apparently for the first time, inside the US Congress


2. `Vulnerable` S. Asia least prepared to deal with urban heat: WB

• South Asia is one of the regions most at risk due to extreme heat but the majority of its urban areas are ill-equipped to deal with the phenomenon, which is increasing in frequency, severity and complexity due to climate change.
• This was stated in a new World Bank report which said that the region, home to a quarter of the world`s population, was accustomed to extreme heat, but rapid urbanisation and climate change were pushing the region`s limits of adaptation with lethal consequences.
• The impacts of heat in South Asia are already emerging with over 3,600 heat-related deaths in India and Pakistan during the 2015 heat waves. More recently in 2022, at least one billion people in India and Pakistan experienced further record-breaking heat waves with temperatures reaching 51 degrees Celsius in some parts of Pakistan

3. PTV launches platform to view iconic serials

• For millennials, watching PTV shows in the evening is part of their childhood memories a nostalgia that still hits strong at the slightest mention of any of those iconic serials.
• The viewers can now relive those glorious memories as the state run Pakistan Television (PTV) has officially launched its first OTT platform service PTVFLLIX.
• A subscription-based platform, PTVFLIX will allow users to watch old dramas, sitcoms and numerous other programmes that helped build the foundations of PTV in the entertainment industry not just in Pakistan, but also for viewers across the world


4. Japan approves abortion pill for first time

• The abortion pill will become available in Japan for the first time after the health ministry approved the drug used to terminate early-stage pregnancy.
• Abortion is legal in Japan up to 22 weeks but consent is usually required from a spouse or partner, and until now a surgical procedure had been the only option.
• The ministry said in a notification to healthcare officials on Friday it had approved the drug made by British pharmaceutical company Line pharma


5. Erdogan returns from three-day campaign absence

• Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on April 29, 2023 appeared in public for the first time in three days after a stomach infection kept him off the campaign trail before key polls.
• Smiling and dressed in a red windbreaker, the 69-year-old leader walked out on the stage of an Istanbul aviation festival and tossed out flowers to flag-waving supporters.
• He arrived together with his close ally, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and Libyan prime minister Abdelhamid Dbeibah
