1. ECP defends move to delay polls beyond 90-day limit

Just a day after announcing a delimitation schedule that all but confirmed that polls would be delayed for longer than the stipulated 90-day period, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) defended its move, saying the exercise was a constitutional requirement for holding polls, and that without fresh delimitation of constituencies and updated electoral rolls, voters will not have true representation in parliament.
The ECP expects to complete the process of fresh delimitation of national and provincial assembly constituencies by December 14 over a month beyond the constitutionally-mandated deadline for conducting general elections in the country


2. Ali Domki sworn in as Balochistan`s interim CM

Mir Ali Mardan Domki was sworn in as the eighth interim chief minister of Balochistan on Friday soon after his nomination for the coveted slot was approved by the parliamentary committee.
Balochistan Governor Malik Abdul Wali Khan Kakar administered the oath to Mr Domki at a ceremony held at Governor House.
Mr Domki`s nomination was approved by the parliamentary committee, which was notified by Speaker Jan Muhammad Jamali on Thursday evening, after consensus was reached among its members and with the green signal from outgoing CM Mir Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo

3. GB to go plastic-free from 25th

In order to prevent hazardous impacts on human health and environment, the Gilgit Baltistan government has decided to impose a complete ban on single-use plastic throughout the region.
According to a notification issued by the GB home department on Friday, import and manufacturing of all kinds of single-use plastic bags, bottles and other items across the region have also been banned. The government also placed a ban on use of bottled water at government offices, meetings, seminars, workshops, etc.
The ban would be effective from Aug 25 and violators would be fined up to Rs10,000


4. CIE announces retake of exams for Pakistani students in November

The Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) has announced that Pakistani students could retake their A level exam in November without paying any fee after much backlash was received from them and their parents for scoring poor grades in the recently-announced results.
Most of the 45,000 Pakistani students who took the A level exams this year were disappointed with their results, with majority getting Cs, Ds, Es and Us and a few As and Bs.
The CIEhadassessedthe subjects whose exams were cancelled after the May 9 incident on the basis of components for the exams they sat for during the 2023 series


5. WFP, Balochistan sign deal to fight food insecurity

The World Food Programme (WFP) of the United Nations has signed an agreement with the Balochistan government to roll out programmes in the province to combat food insecurity and foster sustainable development.
The programmes are in line with the WFP Country Strategic Plan (CSP) covering the 2023-2027 period. As part of the agreement, the Rome-based UN agency will work with the Balochistan government to translate plans into actions aligned with the government priorities
