1. Who assented to controversial laws, asks Alvi

A day after two contested pieces of legislation Official Secrets (Amendment) Bill 2023 and the Pakistan Army (Amendment) Bill 2023 became acts of parliament, President Arif Alvi triggered a massive controversy on Sunday by claiming he had not signed them himself.
The unprecedented claims made by the president opened the nood gates of claims and counter-claims, prompting a weekend presser by the caretaker ministers for law and information, as well as a barrage of recriminations from the former ruling party, PTI.
In a tweet on X (formerly Twitter), President Alvi pointed the finger at his staff, saying he was duped by the presidency staff who did not return the said `unsigned` bills despite repeated directives


2. Punjab cabinet joins prayers at ransacked church

The Punjab caretaker cabinet joined the Christian community in Jaranwala on Sunday as they sat among the rubble of a ransacked church for the first Sunday service after mobs fuelled by allegations of blasphemy burned down over a dozen homes and places of worship in the city.
Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi and his team reached Essa Nagri by bus and attended Sunday prayers in the AEC Church alongside the Christian community

3. Planning Commission wants LPG replaced by LNG

The Planning Commission has asked the government to replace the expensive liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) with relatively cheaper liquefied natural gas (LNG), increase domestic natural gas prices and take immediate steps to implement cross-border gas pipelines like Iran-Pakistan, and Turkmenistan Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (Tapi) projects to achieve energy sustainability.
In a detailed policy advice, the Energy Planning and Resource Centre (EPRC) of the Planning Commission has also called for setting up a third floating LNG terminal, disconnecting gas supply to captive power plants of the industrial sector and using old gas fields to store imported LNG for peak consumption months


4. Air Sial expands international operations

Pakistan`s third private airline, Air Sial, has expanded its international operations with a total of two weekly flights from Sialkot and five weekly flights from Multan.
According to a statement issued by a spokesperson of the UAE embassy in Islamabad, the UAE Consul General in Karachi Bakheet Ateeg Al-Rumaithi officially launched the first international flight along with Air Sial Chairman Fazal Jilani at Sialkot International Airport.
A modest yet elegant ceremony, including a cake-cutting event, was held at the airport to mark the occasion of the airline`s first international flight


5. KP govt revives defunct Fata Tribunal for three years on PHC order

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has revived the erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas Tribunal on the order of the Peshawar High Court for hearing a certain category of cases under the repealed Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR).
Presently, the three-member tribunal will hear 11 of the cases referred by the high court including that of Dr Shakil Afridi, which were pending with the tribunal when it had become defunct with the repealing of the FCR in 2018

6. Dr Tariq Usman made CEO of TransPeshawar

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa caretaker government has assigned Dr Tariq Usman Saeed, a deputy director at the provincial transport and mass transit department, the additional charge of the chief executive officer of the TransPeshawar, the operator of Bus Rapid Transit system in the provincial capital.
A statement issued here said Dr Saeed, currently working as deputy director (technical) at the directorate of transport, has been notified to take additional charge as the CEO of TransPeshawar. It said Dr Saeed, a FulbHght alumnus, held a doctoral degree with dual majors in transportation and infrastructure systems engineering and computational engineering from Purdue University of the United States


7. Schools shut in W. Bank town as Israeli troops hunt for shooting suspect

Schools were shut on Sunday in the occupied West Bank town of Huwara as troops searched for the suspected killer of an Israeli father and his son who were shot dead over the weekend.
The two Israeli men were gunned down on Saturday at a car wash in Huwara, in the latest attack to rock the territory where violence has surged this year.
Israeli media identified the two as Shay Silas Nigrekar, 60, and Aviad Nir, 28


8. Erdogan travels to Hungary for talks on Nato

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Budapest on Sunday, with energy security and Sweden`s membership of Nato on the agenda for both countries.
Hungary has still not voted to approve the Nordic country`s entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, having aligned itself with Turkiye which had long blocked Sweden`s membership before lifting its veto last month


9. Zelensky hails `historic` F-16 deal

President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday hailed on a visit to the Netherlands a `historic` decision to supply F-16 fighter jets to strengthen Ukraine`s Soviet-era air force.
Zelensky landed at a Dutch air force base in Eindhoven at around midday, a Dutch government spokesperson said, and inspected the aircraft shortly afterwards


10. Russia`s Luna-25 lander crashes into the moon

The Luna-25 probe, Russia`s first moon mission in almost 50 years, has crashed on the moon after an incident during prelanding manoeuvres, Russian space agency Roscosmos said on Sunday.
Communication with Luna-25 was lost at 2:57pm (1157 GMT) on Saturday, Roscosmos said. According to preliminary findings, the lander `has ceased to exist following a collision with the moon`s surface`
