1. ECP starts consultations with political parties on roadmap to elections from today

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will start consultations with mainstream political parties on devising a roadmap to the general elections from Thursday (today).
Informed sources told Dawn that letters have been sent to Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chief Imran Khan and Jamiat Ulemai-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Imran Khan, inviting them to attend the separately convened meetings in person, or through their authorised representatives


2. UNDP, EU, courts collaborate to improve legal aid in provinces

The high courts of Peshawar and Balochistan have collaborated with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the European Union to enhance access to legal aid in the two provinces.
At a workshop concluded in Swat on Wednesday, stakeholders from the justice system in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan discussed challenges and opportunities faced by the District Legal Empowerment Committees (DLECs) functioning in the two provinces

3. Poliovirus detected in Rawalpindi`s sewage samples

An environmental sample from Rawalpindi has been tested positive for wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1).
According to the Pakistan Polio Laboratory at the National Institute of Health (NIH), the virus was found in an environmental sample collected from Safdarabad site. The lab is also the World Health Organisation`s regional reference laboratory for the polio programme.
According to an official at the NIH, it was the second positive sample from Rawalpindi this year and the isolated virus was genetically linked to the virus cluster circulating in Nangarhar province of neighbouring Afghanistan


4. Qatar to take lpc stake in Ambani`s retail firm

Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) will invest $1 billion for a one per cent stake in India`s Reliance Retail Ventures, the retail arm of billionaire Mukesh Ambani`s Reliance Industries, nearly doubling its valuation to $100bn from its last funding round in 2020.
Reliance Retail, India`s largest retailer, has been partnering with a slew of global brands like Burberry, Pret A Manger and Tiffany to launch and expand their presence in India


5. Thai PM takes office, vows four years of change

Thailand`s new prime minister vowed to bring four years of change to the kingdom as he took office on Wednesday at the head of a controversial coalition including pro-military parties linked to former coup-makers.

6. N. Korea fires `space launch vehicle`

North Korea has fired what it claims is a `space launch vehicle, South Korea`s military said early Thursday, on day one of a window set by Pyongyang for its second attempt at putting a military satellite in orbit.
South Korea`s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Pyongyang had fired `what the North claims is a space launch vehicle, without offering further details.
The launch was first signaled by the Japanese government, which said the North had fired a suspectedballistic missile. The Kyodo agency, citing the government in Tokyo, said the projectile had flown over Japanese territory


7. US okays sale of sensors for Taiwan`s fighters

The United States said on Wednesday it approved the sale to Taiwan of advanced sensor equipment for its fighter jets, the latest upgrade as fears rise over China.
The State Department said it informed Congress of the 500 million sale of F-16 Infrared Search and Track systems and related equipment to help Taiwan `maintain a credible defensive capability.` The sale will help Taiwan `meet current and future threats by contributing to the recipient`s abilities to defend its airspace, provide regional security and increase interoperability with the United States through its F-16 programme


8. Russia`s air chief sacked over links to mutiny

Russia has removed Sergei Surovikin, nicknamed `General Armageddon`, as head of the air force after he vanished from public view during a Wagner mercenary mutiny against the top army brass, two Russian news outlets reported on Wednesday.
A recipient of Russia`s top military award, Surovikin is the most senior Russian military figure to lose his job over the June 23-34 mutiny, which President Vladimir Putin said could have tipped Russia into civil war


9. India becomes first nation to land near Moon`s south pole

India on Wednesday became the first nation to land a craft near the Moon`s south pole, a historic triumph for the world`s most populous nation and its ambitious, cut-price space programme.
The unmanned Chandrayaan-3, which means `Mooneraft` in Sanskrit, touched down at 6:04pm India time (1234 GMT) as mission control technicians cheered wildly and embraced their colleagues.
Its landing comes days after a Russian probe crashed in the same region and four years since the previous Indian attempt failed at the last moment


10. Scientists solve genetic puzzle of the `Y` chromosome

Scientists have taken an important step forward in understanding the human genome our genetic blueprint by fully deciphering the enigmatic Y chromosome present in males, an achievement that could help guide research on infertility in men.
Researchers on Wednesday unveiled the first complete sequence of the human Y chromosome, which is one of the two sex chromosomes the X chromosome being the other and is typically passed down from male parent to male offspring. It is the last of the 24 chromosomes threadlike structures that carrygenetic information from cell to cell in the human genome to be sequenced
