1. `Empowered` CEC turns down president`s meeting offer

As expected, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja on Thursday declined President Arif Alvi`s invitation for consultations to fix a date for polls, saying that under an amended law, such a meeting would be of `scant consequence`.
In his response to the presidential letter a copy of which is available with Dawn the CEC claimed the president had no role to play in the process of deciding when to hold elections.
President Alvi, on the other hand, has sought the opinion of the Ministry of Law and Justice on the position taken by the ECP


2. AJK govt reshuffles bureaucracy

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government on Thursday elevated a senior police officer as secretary to the government apart from making some other mutual transfers mainly in the police department.
According to a notification, Dr Khalid Mahmood Chauhan, deputy inspector general (DIG) police in Mirpur region, was transferred and posted as secretary tourism and archaeology in place of Ms Midhat Shahzad who was transferred and posted as secretary sports, youth and culture

3. PM Kakar reshapes cabinet committees with focus on China

Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on Thursday reconstituted three key committees of the federal cabinet including a downgrade of all important Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE) with greater focus on Chinese investments.
According to separate notifications issued by the Cabinet Secretariat, the CCoE would now be headed by Minister for Power & Petroleum Muhammad Ali Ghulam Ali instead of the prime minister as used to be in the PDM government


4. Punjab forms JITs to arrest Jaranwala attackers

The interim Punjab government has formed 10 joint investigation teams (JITs) to arrest the attackers who vandalised churches and homes of Christians in Jaranwala last week.
The attacks in Jaranwala took place on Aug 16, when a mob of hundreds rampaged through Christian-majority areas, vandalising and torching several churches, besides ransacking and damaging dozens of homes


5. US supports fair elections, ambassador tells CEC

US Ambassador Donald Blome on Thursday met Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja to reaffirm the United States` support for free and fair elections `conducted in accordance with Pakistan`s laws and Constitution`.
According to a press release issued by the US Embassy, the US ambassador reaffirmed that Pakistan`s leaders are the people`s choice, underscoring commitment to enhancing US-Pakistan ties regardless of the chosen leadership.
Though not explicitly stated, concerns over poll delay were implied as global figures urged elections within 90 days per the Constitution
