1. Fresh ECP assurance rekindles hopes for elections in February

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has said it would carry out work on delimiting constituencies and updating the electoral rolls side by side to ensure the work is done in the minimum possible time, rekindling hope for polls in February next year.
The assurance was held out to a PML-N delegation, which had a consultative meeting with the ECP on the roadmap to polls on Friday.
Though it would still be a violation of the Constitution, which requires conduct of polls within 90 days after the dissolution of assemblies, it allays fears that the elections could be delayed for several months after completion of delimitation on the pretext of synchronisation of electoral rolls with new census blocks


2. Pakistan never asked to join BRICS, says FO

Pakistan was yet to make a formal request to join the bloc of developing nations BRICS, Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said on Friday.
Her statement came a day after the bloc initially composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa added Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina and the United Arab Emirates to its ranks.
`We will examine the latest developments and make a determination about our future engagement with BRICS,` Ms Baloch said during the weekly press briefing at the FO


3. Two REITs get first-ever Sharia certificates

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has issued the first-ever certificates of Sharia compliance to two real estate investment trusts Signature Residency REIT and Rahat Residency REIT.
In pursuance of the Federal Sharia Court (FSC) judgement, the SECP issued Guidelines for Offering Islamic Financial Services 2023 to facilitate conventional financial institutions intending to convert themselves into Sharia-compliant business models.
Since the issuance of the guidelines, several entities have applied for certification as Sharia-compliant companies


4. `No law allows for meetings with suspects in army custody`

The Punjab caretaker government has informed the Lahore High Court (LHC) that visiting a suspect in military custody was not allowed under any law.
The court was hearing a petition filed by Hafeezullah Niazi to recover his son, Barrister Hassaan Khan Niazi, and allow him to meet his son who was in military custody.
Barrister Niazi has been handed over to the military for trial over his alleged involvement in the attack on the Lahore corps commander`s house on May 9.


5. In debut talk with IMF, Shamshad vows policy upkeep

Caretaker Finance Minister Shamshad Akhtar had an introductory virtual engagement with the staff mission of the International Momentary Fund (IMF) and is reported to have promised steadfast implementation of the policy actions committed under the $3bn Standby Arrangement during the tenure of the caretaker government to ensure economic stability.
Informed sources said the two sides had an informal update of the programme implementation with particular emphasis on structural benchmarks necessary for successful completion of the second quarterly review due in October or early November based on end September data that would secure disbursement of about $710 million worth of second tranche in December

6. China says India free to join largest trade bloc

India is free to join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), China`s Vice Commerce Minister Wang Shouwen said on Friday in New Delhi, adding that it would boost trade between India and China which is growing `very fast`.
The RCEP is the world`s largest trade bloc backed by China and groups 15 Asia-Pacific economies, including Australia, Japan, New Zealand and 10 member-states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean)


7. Denmark moves to ban desecration of holy texts

Denmark on Friday said it plans to ban desecration of religious scriptures, including the Holy Quran, after a string of incidents in which Islam`s holy book was disrespected sparked anger in Muslim countries.
The ban, due to be presented to parliament on Sept 1, comes six years after Denmark abolished its 334-year-old blasphemy law. The bill is expected to pass through parliament, where the left-right government holds a majority


8. Niger expels French ambassador

Niger`s junta, which seize d power in a coup on July 26, ordered French ambassador Sylvain Itte to leave the country within 48 hours on Friday, the foreign ministry said.
The decision to expel the ambassador was taken partly due to his refusal to respond to an invitation to a meeting with Niger`s minister of foreign affairs, the ministry said in a statement.
It added that other actions by the French government were also contrary to the interests of Niger, without going into further detail


9. Trump arrested in election fraud case

Former US president Donald Trump was arrested at a Georgia jail on Thursday on racketeering and conspiracy charges and released on a $200,000 bond after having a historic mugshot taken.
Trump, who is accused of colluding with 18 other defendants to overturn the 2020 election result in the southern state, spent less than 30 minutes inside Atlanta`s Fulton County Jail before leaving in a motorcade for the airport
