1. Govt to come up with relief on inflated bills today
- An `emergency` meeting summoned by interim Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar to discuss the issue of inflated power bills, which have resulted in countrywide protests, remained inconclusive on Sunday with a second round scheduled to take place on Monday (today).
The issue of exorbitant electricity bills is believed to be the first test of the interim set-up, which is to remain in office till the general elections
2. Additional grants plugged, except for `severe disasters`
- The caretaker government has tightened the fiscal policy, banning supplementary grants except in case of severe natural calamities and setting strict conditions for diverting funds to other objectives until an elected government takes charge.
- `No Supplementary Grants for any additional unbudgeted spending over the parliamentary approved level in FY24 [current fiscal year] will be approved in order to remain within the approved budgetary allocation, at least until the formation of a new government after the elections (except if needed to respond to a severe natural disaster),` the Ministry of Finance told all ministries, divisions and associated departments and entities in a memorandum
3. Pakistan seeks $300m ADB loan for water project
- Pakistan has requested the Asian Development Bank for $300 million loan for the Kurram Tangi Integrated Water Resources Development project which aims to improve energy, water and food security in the country.
- The ADB is expected to approve the loan in 2024, according to the project document released by the bank. The proposed project will directly contribute to the two strategic pillars of Pakistan`s National Poverty Reduction Strategy: `Increasing productivity and value addition in agriculture` and `Integrated Energy Development Programme`
4. Misaq centres set up for welfare of Christian community
- Misaq centres for the welfare of religious minorities have been established at Bani, Naseerabad and Sadigabad localities of Rawalpindi and the district administration has directed the building department to repair all roads along churches in these areas.
- Moreover, a WhatsApp group, consisting of administrative officers and 40 Christian representatives, has also been formed by the administration to increase coordination with the minority representatives so that if there is any news that could disrupt peace and communal harmony it should be investigated immediately and necessary action taken at once
5. No radioactivity detected near N-plant, says Japan
- Tests of seawater near Japan`s Fukushima nuclear power plant have not detected any radioactivity, the environment ministry said on Sunday, days after authorities began discharging into the sea treated water used to cool damaged reactors.
- Japan started releasing water from the wrecked Fukushima plant into the Pacific Ocean on Thursday, sparking protests in Japan and neighbouring countries, in particular China, which banned aquatic product imports from Japan

6. Second cargo ship leaves Odesa despite threat
- Ukraine said on Sunday a second civilian cargo ship had left the southern port of Odesa, despite warnings from Russia that vessels using Ukraine`s Black Sea ports could be considered targets.

8. US plea proposal for 9/11 suspects splits victims` relatives
- A proposal to allow alleged perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks to plead guilty and avoid the death penalty poses a powerful dilemma for victims` families, some of whom still want to seek the ultimate retribution after two decades of legal limbo.
- The proposal detailed by prosecutors in a letter this month could offer families of the nearly 3,000 victims the best path to a resolution of a case bogged down in pre-trial manoeuvrings in the Guantanamo military commissions for years and with no end in sight
9. France to outlaw abayas in schools, says minister
- French authorities are to ban the wearing in school of abaya dresses worn by some Muslim women, the education minister said Sunday, arguing the garment violated France`s strict secular laws in education.
- `It will no longer be possible to wear an abaya at school,` Education Minister Gabriel Attal told TF1 television, saying he would give `clear rules at the national level` to school heads ahead of the return to classes nationwide from September 4.
10. Arshad makes history with javelin silver at World Athletics
- When Arshad Nadeem saw the javelin land on his third attempt, he looked up and smiled for the world.
- A season`s best throw of 87.82 metres at the World Athletics Championships on Sunday had lifted Arshad from sixth to second place in the javelin throw final, only behind India`s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra.
- Chopra had set the bar with his first legitimate throw on the second attempt when he threw the javelin 88.17 metres
