1. Caretakers rule out relief in power bills

In a reality check following almost week-long consultations, caretaker Finance Minister Dr Shamshad Akhtar on Wednesday told senators and the electricity consumers to `manage (their) expectations` raised by caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar for relief in excessive power bills, saying the country`s fiscal space did not permit any subsidy or relief.
`Please manage your expectations, she said apparently after engagements with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over the government`s desire for some programme relaxations to pro-vide relief in power bills. `These are things that were approved long before we came and in order to examine things we need to really reflect on…these are there for decades. How can we change decades-old policies,` she said


2. ECP `promises` polls by mid-Feb, at the most

General elections would be held by mid-February at any cost, perhaps by late January if the delimitation of constituencies is completed earlier, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) assured the Awami National Party (ANP) on Wednesday, allaying fears that polls could be delayed indefinitely to extend the interim government`s tenure.
The assurance was given during a consultative meeting between the ECP and an ANP delegation to discuss a roadmap for the coming elections

4. US space force plans to track N. Korea projectiles

6. Military topples Gabon president after disputed polls

Rebel officers in the oil-rich central African state of Gabon announced on Wednesday they had seized power following disputed elections in which President Ali Bongo Ondimba, in power since 2009, had been declared victor.

Ukrainian drones struck targets in at least six regions deep within Russia on Wednesday, including an airfield where they destroyed military transport planes, in one of the broadest volleys yet of Kyiv`s campaign to turn the tables on Moscow.
Russian officials described attacks on targets in the Pskov, Bryansk, Kaluga, Orlov, Ryazan and Moscow regions. The Russian foreign ministry said the attacks would `not go unpunished` and the drones could not have reached so far into Russian territory without Western help

Warner Bros Discovery named Mark Thompson as CEO of CNN on Wednesday, tasking the former New York Times and BBC chief with reviving a news network beset by sagging ratings and falling profits.
Thompson succeeds Chris Licht, who stepped down in June after a rocky one year at the helm that included a divisive town hall with former Republican US president Donald Trump and the shutdown of CNN+ streaming service just weeks after its launch
