6. Burushaski script in Roman, Perso-Arabic characters okayed

• The National Curriculum Council (NCC) has approved the script of the Burushaski language in Perso-Arabic and Roman characters.
• The script was approved in a ceremony, where NCC Director Prof Dr Mariam Chughtai was the chief guest. `We should celebrate our languages and it is a great responsibility of the government, Dr Chughtai said.
• Dr Mueezuddin Hakal of the Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, recalled the contribution of several people responsible for the development of this script, which has evolved as a standard script for every dialect of the Burushaski language. It was recorded for the first time in 1854 by Alexander Cunningham, who named it `Khajona`. It is now spoken by 300,000 people, according to a press release

7. India raises defence budget to $72bn amid tensions with China

• India proposed on February 1, 2023 5.94 trillion rupees ($72.6 billion) in defence spending for the 2023-24 financial year, 13 per cent up from the previous period`s initial estimates, aiming to add more fighter jets and roads along its tense border with China.
• Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman allocated 1.63 trillion rupees for defence capital outlays an expenditure that would include new weapons, aircraft, warships and other military hardware, as she unveiled nearly $550 billion of total federal spending in the annual budget for 2023-24 starting in April.
• She said 2.77 trillion rupees would be devoted to military salaries and benefits in 2023-24, 1.38 trillion on pensions for retired soldiers, and further amounts for miscellaneous items


8. Humanoid robots to be star attractions at UN`s AI summit

• Eight human old robots will be the star attractions when the United Nations hosts its first summit since the start of the pandemic on the benefits of artificial intelligence, it said Wednesday.
• The AI for Good Global Summit, first held in 2017, will return to Geneva on July 6 and 7 after a three year Covid-imposed break, the UN`s International Telecommunication Union (ITU) said.
• The event will aim to showcase how artificial intelligence and other new technologies can help reach the UN`s so-called sustainable development goals (SDGs), including on fighting climate change and boosting humanitarian action


9. Australia finds lost radioactive capsule

• A tiny but dangerously radioactive capsule that fell off a truck on a remote Australian outback highway has been found, relieved authorities said on Wednesday.
• The silver-coloured cylinder smaller than a human fingernail was recovered by the side of the road near the town of Newman, Western Australia, state emergency services said.
• The capsule disappeared from a truck travelling along the Great Northern Highway from a remote mine operated by Rio Tinto to the southwestern city of Perth sometime in mid-January.
• Its disappearance went unnoticed until later in the month

• Pakistan took full advantage of being the home side as they defeated Palestine 11-3 to lift the trophy of the 15th edition of the West Asia Baseball Cup here at the Pakistan Sports Complex on February 1, 2023.
• Both the teams went into the final undefeated but Pakistan`s captain Faqir Hussain led from the front as he top scored with three runs and maintained the host`s dominance.
• Faqir was ably assisted by his teammates as Arslan Jamshaid, Mohammad Hussain, Fazal Khan scored two runs apiece while the pitchers also delivered aggressively to ensure the triumph
