1. `Harsh` IMF conditions alarm those at the helm

• After the first round of technical talks between the International Monetary Fund (IMF) team and the government concluded on February 3, 2023, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif observed that the lender was imposing conditions that were `beyond our wildest dreams`.
• The delegation, headed by Nathan Porter, began make-or-break discussions with the government on the completion of the ninth review on Jan 31.
• The four-day talks were held in Islamabad with representatives from more than seven departments present, to identify major fiscal gaps and discuss ways to plug them.
• The discussions covered details of expenditures and revenue performance to identify the policy measures both revenue and non-revenue that would have to be taken over the next four months of the current fiscal year


2. ECP gives polling date for 31 more NA seats

• While the fate of two provincial assemblies hangs in the balance after the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governors requested the ECP to consult `stakeholders` in the wake of security and economic situation before finalising a schedule, the Election Commission of Pakistan on Friday set March 19 for the by-election on another 31 National Assembly seats.
• The ECP, which has announced the schedule for by-polls on 31 seats a week after it had set March 16 as the polling date for by-election on 33 NA seats, is expected to declare a polling date within the next few days for the remaining 22 constituencies of the total 86 vacant seats in the lower house of parliament Also, the ECP meeting, which was chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, discussed general elections to the Punjab and KP assemblies and decided to meet again on Feb 7 when chief secretaries and police chiefs of both the provinces would brief the commission on measures to ensure `safe and peaceful` conduct of elections to the provincial assemblies. The commission also decided to consult political parties on Feb 9 to finalise a code of conduct

3. China to invest in nuclear energy

• China has expressed its willingness to boost investments in Pakistan`s nuclear energy sector and the two countries are set to hold talks in the near future.
• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on February 3, 2023 met with a delegation of China National Nuclear Corporation, led by Chinese charge d`affaires in Pakistan, Pang Chunxue.
• China has shown its willingness to boost Pakistan`s capacity to produce electricity from nuclear energy and delegation-level talks in this regard to formalise deals


4. Six militants killed in North Waziristan, Charsadda

• Six militants including two in North Waziristan and four in Charsadda were killed in exchange of fire with security forces and police on Friday. Officials privy to the developments said that intelligence-based operations were being carried out in other districts as well.
• They said that two militants were killed in a crossfire between security forces and militants in Esham area of district North Waziristan, adding that arms and ammunition was also recovered from the terrorists.
• `During intense exchange of fire, two terrorists were killed. Weapons and ammunition were also recovered from the killed terrorists,` read a statement issued Inter Services Public Relation (ISPR), the military`s media wing


5. Italy to enhance economic cooperation with Pakistan

• Italy has decided to enhance its economic cooperation with Pakistan and will focus on increasing assistance through development projects.
• The Director General of Rome-based Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), Luca Maestripieri, accompanied by Ambassador of Italy Andreas Ferrarese, held a meeting with Economic Affairs Division Secretary Dr Kazim Niaz here on Friday and assured Pakistan of Italy`s economic assistance.
• `Pakistan is a very important country for us, and we will continue to engage with the Pakistan government through our economic cooperation,` Luca Maestripieri said
