6. Finland debates Nato ratification that may leave Sweden behind

• Finnish parliamentary groups said on Friday they may ratify Nato`s founding treaties in the coming weeks, a key step that could lead the country to proceed with membership of the Western military alliance ahead of neighbouring Sweden.
• The two Nordic countries sought Nato membership shortly after Russia`s invasion of Ukraine last year and have said they want to join `hand in hand`, but while most member-states have ratified the applications, Turkiye objects to Sweden`s candidacy.
• Facing an April election, most political parties in Finland have said they want parliament to vote on the treaties before its March 3 recess, and the foreign affairs committee on Friday debated required legislation behind closed doors


7. Moldova gets new pro-EU prime minister

• Moldova`s pro-European President Maia Sandu on February 10, 2023 nominated a new prime minister after the current one resigned, triggering the government`s collapse in the struggling eastern European country.
• Sandu`s choice her pro-European security advisor Dorin Recean is likely to be approved without hurdles in the country of 2.6 million people nestled between Romania and Ukraine.
• `The new government will be formed promptly and will lead the country on the path of reconstruction, Sandu said in a televised statement


8. UK left allies `stranded` during Kabul exodus

• UK lawmakers have admitted that thousands of Afghans who had helped British forces were left stranded as the country rushed to evacuate its personnel after the Afghan Taliban`s takeover of Kabul in August 2021.
• The admission was made in a new report prepared by the House of Commons Defence Committee, led by Conservative MP Tobias Ellwood, according to the BBC.
• Calling the withdrawal `a dark chapter` for the UK, the committee has requested the government to hold an `honest` inquiry into the UK`s departure from Afghanistan, which led to the return of the Taliban to power


9. Europe shoots for the moon with role in Nasa programme

• European astronauts could walk on the Moon for the first time in the coming years, in exchange for the continent taking on a key role in an ambitious Nasa space programme.
• The US space agency`s Artemis programme aims to return humans to the Moon for the first time since the historic Apollo missions, which ended in 1972.
• For the first time, the European Space Agency (ESA) and European aerospace giant Airbus have been entrusted with supplying vital `service modules` (ESMs) for Nasa`s Orion spacecraft. In exchange, Europe has three guaranteed seats on the mission`s flights, probably from 2027, although discussions are ongoing to try to get earlier spots


10. Poet of romance Amjad Islam breathes his last

• Urdu poet and playwright Amjad Islam Amjad died of heart attack on February 10, 2023. He was 78.
• Born in 1944 in Lahore, Amjad won acclaim as a poet of love and romance. His blank verse had rhythm and flow, interspersed with contemporary diction, but without descending into classicism.
• Amjad Islam Amjad developed his own style and took no time in endearing himself to poetry aficionados.
• He made a conscious attempt to make Naghmagi (rhythm) an integral part of his verse. The poet himself used to stress that `my readers remember my blank verses due to rhythm rather than the thought in them`
