6. AI poses `serious risk` for human rights, says UN

• The United Nations rights chief on February 18, 2023 warned that recent advances in artificial intelligence posed a grave threat to human rights and called for safeguards to prevent violations.
• This week more than 60 nations including the United States and China called for regulating AI in defence to ensure it `does not undermine international security, stability and accountability`.
• There have been increasing concerns over things such as AI-guided drones, `slaughterbots` that can kill with no human intervention and the risk that artificial intelligence could escalate a military conflict


7. N. Korea fires missile into economic zone of Japan

• North Korea fired an intercontinental ballistic missile which landed in Japan`s exclusive economic zone on February 18, 2023, Seoul and Tokyo said, after Pyongyang warned of a strong response to upcoming US-South Korean military drills.
• Japan said North Korea `fired one ICBM-class ballistic missile` which flew for some 66 minutes before landing in the country`s exclusive economic zone, chief government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters.
• Tokyo`s defence minister Yasukazu Hamada said the missile could have had the capacity to fly 14,000 km, indicating it was capable of hitting anywhere on the mainland US


8. Israeli envoy expelled from African Union summit

• As African leaders gathered on February 18, 2023 in the Ethiopian capital for the two-day African Union (AU) summit, aiming to jumpstart a faltering trade deal and focusing on challenges of armed conflict and food crisis, an Israeli diplomat was expelled out of the AU assembly.
• An AU official told AFP that the diplomat who was `asked to leave` had not been invited to attend the meeting, with a non-transferable invitation only issued to Israel`s ambassador to the African Union, Aleli Admasu.
• `It is regrettable that the individual in question would abuse such a courtesy,` the official said.
• While condemning the `severe` expulsion of a senior diplomat from the AU summit, Israel accused arch-foe Iran of orchestrating the move with help from Algeria and South Africa


9. China swipes at `hysterical` US in Munich security moot

• China`s top diplomat Wang Yi on February 18, 2023 blasted the US reaction to what Washington has called a Chinese spy balloon as `hysterical and absurd`, in uncharacteristically strong remarks against the top Western power.
• Addressing a gathering of world leaders at the Munich Security Conference, Wang said President Joe Biden`s administration has a `misguided` perception of Beijing and accused the US of trying to `smear` the Asian giant while it itself was implementing policies that ran counter to its paradigms, such as free trade.
• `There are many balloons from many countries in the sky. Do you want to down each and every one of them?` Wang asked. `We urge the United States not to do such preposterous things simply to divert attention from its own domestic problems


10. Pakistan Super League Ton-up Guptill stars as Gladiators keep Kings winless

• Whenever the going got tough for Quetta Gladiators, their young pacers Mohammad Hasnain and Naseem Shah showed up.
• After Quetta were powered to 168, thanks to a counter-attacking century by Martin Guptill, the duo cancelled the threat posed by Karachi Kings` unrelenting veteran Shoaib Malik and the dew that fell over the National Stadium here on a misty Saturday night, to take the HBL Pakistan Super League match by six runs.
• While Quetta bounced back from a forgettable defeat against Multan Sultans, it was the third consecutive loss for the Karachi outfit.
