6. UN humanitarian system meets less than half of hunger funding need: report

• Only 47 per cent of hunger funding needs through the UN humanitarian system are met, leaving a hunger funding gap of 53 per cent, according to the Action against Hunger 2023 Hunger Funding Gap Report released on Wednesday.
• The report also found that countries experiencing the worst hunger crisis received less hunger funding (by the percentage of appeals filed) than countries with lower rates of hunger.
• The report, based on 2022 data recorded this month, was driven from the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) financial tracking service.
• This yielded a list of 13 countries, which are the focus of the report, including Pakistan


7. Seattle becomes first US city to ban caste discrimination

• Seattle has become the first city in the United States to ban discrimination based on caste, following a city council vote on Tuesday.
• `It`s official: our movement has won a historic, first in-the-nation ban on caste discrimination in Seattle! tweeted Indian American council member Kshama Sawant, who introduced the legislation.
• `Now we need to build a movement to spread this victory around the country.` The city council of Seattle, in the northwest state of Washington, voted 6-1 in favor of the ban, which applies to employment, housing, public transport and retail establishments


8. US agrees to extradite former Peruvian president Toledo

• Peru`s attorney general`s office said on Twitter that the US State Department had agreed to extradite former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo on corruption charges on Tuesday.
• Toledo, 76, was arrested in the United States in 2019 after Peru formally requested his extradition.
• Peruvian authorities allege that Toledo, who governed the Andean country between 2001 and 2006, took bribes of more than $25 million from Brazilian construction conglomerate Odebrecht in exchange for help securing public works contracts


9. 11 Palestinians killed, at least 80 injured in `bloody` Israeli raid

• Israeli troops killed 11 Palestinians on February 22, 2023 in a raid on the occupied West Bank city of Nablus, while some 80 more suffered gunshot wounds, the Palestinian health ministry said.
• Those killed `as a result of the occupation`s aggression on Nablus` were aged between 23 and 72, the ministry said.
• Over 50 people were hospitalised with gunshot wounds, health officials added.
• Top Palestinian official Hussein Al Sheikh decried the incursion as a `massacre` and called for `international protection for our people`


10. Taliban set up investment consortium with foreign firms

• Afghanistan`s Taliban-led administration has set up a consortium of companies, including some in Russia, Iran and Pakistan, to create an investment plan focusing on power, mining and infrastructure, acting minister for commerce and industry Haji Nooruddin Azizi said on February 22, 2023.
• The consortium included 14 Afghan businessmen and the commerce ministry has signed a memorandum of understanding with the foreign companies who would send delegates to Kabul to look into projects worth up to $1 billion. Afghanistan`s economy has been severely hampered since the Taliban took over in 2021, sparking the international community to cut most development funding and enforce sanctions on the banking sector
