6. NA speaker `removes the bails` of 35 more PTI lawmakers

• National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on January 20, 2023 accepted the resignations of another 35 Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) readily declared their seats vacant while the PTI accused the speaker of being `biased and partisan` and termed his move `immoral and illegal`.
• The speaker, who had previously refused to accept the resignations without personal verifications, has already accepted 81 resignations, out of 131 submitted by the members belonging to the PTI and lone Awami Muslim League (AML) member Sheikh Rashid in April last year after the ouster of then prime minister Imran Khan following a no-confidence motion against him.
• With two seats falling vacant one of PTI Chairman Imran Khan due to his disqualification by the ECP and that of Jaffar Leghari due to his death the speaker still holds the resignations of 48 PTI members with him


7. Greenland at its warmest in 1,000 years, says study

• Temperatures in parts of Greenland are warmer than they have been in1,000 years, the co-author of a study that reconstructed conditions by drilling deep into the ice sheet said on January 20, 2023.
• `This confirms the bad news that we know already unfortunately (It is) clear that we need to get this warming under control in order to stop the melting of the Greenlandic ice sheet`, climate physics associate professor Bo Mollesoe Vinther of the University of Copenhagen said.
• By drilling into the ice sheet to retrieve samples of snow and ice from hundreds of years ago, scientists were able to reconstruct temperatures from north and central Greenland from the year 1000 AD to 2011


8. No deal at Nato meeting on tanks for Ukraine

• No decision on supplying Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine was reached at a meeting of allies in Germany, Poland`s defence minister said on January 20, 2023, though he remained optimistic that efforts to provide them would end in success.
• Defence Ministers of 15 countries met on the sidelines of today`s conference and we talked about this topic,` Mariusz Blaszczalc told reporters at the US-run Ramstein air base.
• `I am convinced that coalition building will end in success. We must do everything to help Ukraine so that the war does not spill over to Nato territory,` Blaszczak said


9. UN deputy chief in Kandahar for talks with Taliban

• The United Nations` deputy secretary general met the deputy governor of Afghanistan`s Kandahar, provincial authorities said on January 20, 2023, a rare meeting by a foreign envoy with the Taliban`s leaders in its southern heartland.
• Amina Mohammed is visiting Afghanistan this week and had already met Taliban authorities in Kabul, as well as UN staff and aid groups, to discuss ways to promote and protect women`s rights.
• Her visit comes less than a month after Taliban authorities banned most female NGO workers, leading many NGOs to partially suspend operations


10. S. Arabia links Israel normalisation with two-state solution

• Saudi Arabia will not normalise ties with Israel in the absence of a two-state solution with the Palestinians, the kingdom`s top diplomat has said, according to a tweet by the foreign ministry on January 20, 2023.
• The comments by Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos came as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed normalisation with Saudi Arabia in talks with White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan in Jerusalem on Thursday.
• `True normalisation and true stability will only come through giving the Palestinians a state,` Prince Faisal told Bloomberg at the summit
