1. Govt tweaks NAB law through midnight ordinance

• The federal government on July 3, 2023 introduced further amendments to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) law through an ordinance signed by acting president and Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani, allowing the accountability watchdog to detain suspects over `noncooperation`.
• A notification signed by Mr Sanjrani stated, `The prime minister`s advice at para 6 of the summary is approved. The National Accountability (Amendment) Ordinance, 2023, is signed and promulgated.
• The ordinance signed around midnight also increased the duration of physical remand from 15 days to 30 days. Under a recent amendment by the sitting government to the National Accountability Ordinance 1999, the duration of physical remand had been reduced from 90 days to 14 days


2. Pakistan `too entangled` to be involved in bloc politics: Bilawal

• Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has said that as a developing country facing serious economic and environmental challenges, Pakistan has no time for the Cold War-style bloc politics that appears to be making a comeback.
• He was hinting at the US and China blocs amid strife in the two superpowers` relations while addressing an event in Tokyo on July 3, 2023.
• The foreign minister who is on a four-day official visit to Japan also met his Japanese counterpart and prime minister


3. First suspected case of Naegleria in Lahore

• The first suspected case of brain eating amoeba Naegleria -has been reported in Lahore, setting alarm bells ringing for the public as well as the health authorities.
• As per the report of a private lab, a young patient has tested positive for Naegleria and was immediately shifted to the Services Hospital, where he was isolated for further investigations.
• According to medical experts, the Naegleria fowleri is a free-living amoeba that causes primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a disease of central nervous system

4. Drap seeks oath from employees after WHO demand

• On the directions of the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap) directed its employees to submit affidavits, stating they were not involved in the pharmaceutical business.
• The direction has been given to make sure that conflict of interest would not arise among employees while doing their jobs.
• The letter signed by Deputy Director Quality Management System (QMS) Urooj Fatima, available with Dawn, stated that the WHO team during the formal benchmarking of the National Regulatory System of Pakistan identified various institutional developmental plans (IDPs) required for attaining WHO national regulatory agencies (NRAs) maturity level III in global benchmarking


5. Moody`s, Fitch warn of risks despite IMF deal

• Two leading global rating agencies have warned that Pakistan will require significantly more funds than what it`s receiving from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to meet its debt maturities and to finance its economic recovery, reported Bloomberg on July 3, 2023.
• Moody`s Investors Service and Fitch Ratings that issued the warning are two of the big three credit rating agencies, recognised by the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
• The two agencies noted that Pakistan has to repay $25 billion in the current fiscal year to meet its debt obligations. The repayments include both principal and interest, and are about seven times Pakistan`s foreign exchange reserves, according to Moody`s.
