1. Armed forces deplore TTP havens across western border

• The military has deplored the convenience and freedom with which militants have been launching attacks in Pakistan from Afghanistan and said it expected Afghan rulers to take action. It has also highlighted the involvement of Afghan nationals in `acts of terrorism` in Pakistan.
• `Armed Forces of Pakistan have serious concerns on the safe havens and liberty of action available to TTP [Tehreek-iTaliban Pakistan] in Afghanistan,` the military`s media wing ISPR said in a statement on Friday, two days after 12 soldiers lost their lives in militant attacks in Zhob and Sui districts of Balochistan


2. Work on nuclear plant promising clean power begins

• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on July 14, 2023 performed the groundbreaking of 1,200MW Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit 5 (C-5), which is expected to be completed in seven to eight years at a cost of $3.48 billion.
• Addressing the ceremony, the prime minister said that keeping in mind the country`s requirements of clean and cheap energy sources, the project should be completed before the given schedule.
• PM Shehbaz had on June 30 witnessed the signing of an MoU about the project between China National Nuclear Corporation Overseas Ltd and Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission

3. Sindh passes law to put anklets on criminals

• The Sindh Assembly has passed a bill for e-tagging habitual criminals to monitor their movement as street crimes rise in the province.
• The Sindh Habitual Offenders Monitoring Bill 2022, unanimously passed by the assembly on July 4, 2023, will allow authorities to attach an electronic device in the form of an anklet or bracelet to the body of criminals or suspected criminals at large or out on bail/parole.
• Ghanwer Ali Khan Isran, a member of the ruling PPP, moved the report of the standing committee on the bill introduced last year


4. SBP reserves jump to $4.52bn

• The central bank`s foreign exchange reserves increased by $61 million to close at $4.52 billion during the week ended July 7, official data showed on July 14, 2023.
• The reserves didn`t include the $4.2bn inflows the State Bank received earlier this week from the International Monetary Fund and two countries.
• Adding those inflows will take the bank`s reserves to $8.7bn, close to a level they were last seen in October

5. US to defend allies against `aggression` from N. Korea

• Secretary of State Antony Blinken promised on July 14, 2023 the United States would defend allies from North Korean `aggression`, with Japan and South Korea joining a call to punish Pyongyang for its latest intercontinental ballistic missile test.
• The top US diplomat met jointly with the South Korean and Japanese foreign ministers on the sidelines of a Southeast Asian meeting in Jakarta, with all three condemning what Blinken called `provocations` from Pyongyang.
• `We are joined resolutely in a common defence and making sure that we are doing everything possible to deter and defend against any aggression,` Blinken said
