1. After 18-year delay, GB LG polls likely this year

• The GilgitBaltistan cabinet at its first meeting on Wednesday decided to hold the local bodies elections in the region, bringing an end to a legal battle over the issue.
• Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan, who was in the chair, issued instructions to GB Chief Election Commissioner Raja Shahbaz Khan to make arrangements for the long-delayed vote.
• The cabinet meeting, held at the CM Office in Gilgit, was also attended by Chief Secretary Mohyuddin Ahmed Wani and Inspector General of Police Afzal Mahmood Butt, according to a press release


2. Pakistan`s N-security ranking upgraded

• The Nuclear Security Index 2023, which ranks the security of nuclear materials worldwide, has upgraded Pakistan`s status.
• According to the report, the majority of improvements were in the security of materials and controls.
• The forum ranked Pakistan above India, Iran and North Korea in terms of its handling of hazardous material, showing that the country had gained more points since the last assessment and was number 19 on the list of 22 states.In security of facilities, Pakistan is ranked 32; tied with Russia and Israel, and above India, Iran, Mexico, South Africa, Egypt, North Korea and a few others.
• Pakistan`s score is 61 as it gained four points, whereas India could only score 52 points

3. Pakistani passport ranked fourth worst in world

• For the third consecutive year, the Pakistani passport has been ranked the `fourth worst` by this year`s Henley Passport Index, a ranking of the world`s 199 passports according to the number of destinations their owners can access without a prior visa.
• In the latest ranking, Pakistan`s travel document is only ranked higher than those of Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
• Pakistan`s passport permits visa-free access to 33 states, Syria`s gives access to 30 destinations, Iraq`s allows travel to 29 and Afghanistan`s travel document only affords the bearer access to 29 destinations. The top spot belongs to Singapore, as its passport provides citizens visa-free access to 192 destinations


4. 25,000 Afghans returned home in three months: IOM

• A total of 24,822 undocumented Afghan nationals `spontaneously` returned to Afghanistan from Pakistan between April and June 2023, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said in a report.
• Key findings of the organisation`s Quarterly Flow Monitoring of Undocumented Afghan Returnees from Pakistan, released on Wednesday, showed that 11,397 Afghan nationals returned through the Torkham border point and 13,425 through the West Chaman border


5. Ukrainian FM due today

• Foreign Minister of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba will arrive here on a two-day official visit to Pakistan on July 20 (today).
• According to the Foreign Office, the Ukrainian minister will hold meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.
• The FO said in a statement that Pakistan and Ukraine enjoyed close and cordial relations, particularly in the fields of trade, investment, agriculture and higher education
