1. Five KP policemen martyred in two terror attacks

• Five policemen embraced martyrdom and 12 people nine personnel and three civilians suffered injuries when terrorists attacked an official compound in Bara and a police post near Peshawar within a span of a few hours.
• Officials said two suicide bombers were intercepted by policemen at the entrance of the tehsil headquarters complex and police station adjacent to Bara bazaar around 11am on Thursday. They said police engaged the bombers in a gun battle, which left one of the attackers dead, while the other blew himself up. A portion of the building collapsed owing to the impact of the explosion. Three policemen were martyred and 10 others, including three civilians, injured.


2. Emboldened by `confession`, govt goes on offensive

• In light of an alleged confession by one of his closest aides, the government is planning to prosecute former prime minister Imran Khan under two separate sections of the Official Secrets Act for `retaining` the confidential cipher in a purported bid to stall his ouster from power.
• On July 20, at least four members of the federal cabinet, in separate pressers, assailed the PTI chief on the basis of the supposed confession of Azam Khan, the ex-PM`s former principal secretary

3. Pakistan will work to restore Black Sea grain deal`

• Calling the Black Sea grain deal vital for the world, Pakistan has vowed to work for its restoration after Russia`s recent decision to back out.
• Addressing a joint press conference with his Pakistani counterpart on July 20, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba regretted that his nation, along with countries in Asia and Africa, will suffer the most from Russia`s withdrawal.
• `By doing so, Russia significantly undermined global food security that would result in a hike in global food prices.


4. Pemra bill altering definition of disinformation unveiled

• A Pemra Amendment Bill introduced in the National Assembly on July 20, 2023 was generally lauded by the industry stakeholders, but prima facie sets new definitions related to dissemination of information, thus making it hard to be accepted without a grain of salt.
• The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) Amendment Act 2022, was introduced in the house by Information and Broadcasting Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb.
• Major changes have been made in the structure as well as operation of the regulator; e.g. the number of members in the authority has been enhanced to 13 from 12, apart from its chairperson


5. Rs42.53bn okayed for polls, Rs200m for investment body

• Within the third week of the new fiscal year, the government opened the doors for supplementary grants on Thursday, approving Rs42.53 billion for the upcoming general election and Rs200 million for the newly created Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) a joint initiative of the government and military leadership to promote investment clusters.
• Presiding over a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar also allowed immediate disbursement of Rs10bn as the first instalment required by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to conduct polls. The government will release the remaining funds when needed
