6. Turkish drone kills three PKK fighters
• A Turkish drone strike in northern Iraq on May 16, 2023sday killed three Yazidi fighters affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers` Party (PKK), an Iraqi Kurdish security official said.
• It is the latest deadly strike blamed on Turkiye in Iraq`s autonomous Kurdistan region, where the PKK whose fighters are Turkish Kurds has rear bases.
• The Turkish military maintains dozens of bases in northern Iraq and carries out air strikes and ground operations against the PKK, which is classified as a `terrorist` group by Ankara and its Western allies
7. India considers testing cough syrups before export
• India`s drug regulator has proposed testing cough syrups in government laboratories before they are exported, media outlet News18.com reported on May 16, 2023, after Indian-made syrups were linked to dozens of deaths in Gambia and Uzbekistan last year.
• India`s health ministry received the proposal from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation(CDSCO) this month and is considering it, the news website quoted an unidentified ministry official as saying.
• `The proposal is to test the finished goods at government labs before exporting,` the official told News18.com.
• The official said the syrups could be tested at various laboratories run by the federal government or states
8. Coming years `critical` to slashing plastic pollution, says UN
• The world must halve single use plastics and slash throwaway consumption to stem the tide of environmental pollution, according to a UN report on May 16, 2023 that warns the next few years are critical.
• Concern is growing about the impacts of plastics, with micro plastic fragments found from the deepest oceans trenches to the top of Mount Everest. In humans, they have been detected in blood, breast milk and placentas.
• The report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) comes two weeks before negotiators from nearly 200 countries meet in Paris for a new round of negotiations aimed at reaching a legal agreement next year to end plastic pollution
9. Six African nations come up with Ukraine peace plan
• South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said on May 16, 2023 six African leaders plan to travel to Russia and Ukraine `as soon as is possible` to help find a resolution to the war, claiming that both Putin and Zelensky have agreed to receive the mission and the African heads of state, in both Moscow and Kyiv.
• Ramaphosa told a presser that he had held separate phone calls with the presidents of Russia and Ukraine and presented an initiative drawn up by Zambia, Senegal, the Republic of Congo, Uganda, Egypt and South Africa.
• `I agreed with both President Putin and President Zelensky to commence with preparations for engagements with the African heads of state. We`re hoping we will have intensive discussions,` he said
10. Two Pakistani women scale Lhotse
• Two Pakistani women climbers stunned the mountaineering fraternity, and brought glory to their country, on May 16, 2023 by scaling Lhotse, the world`s fourth highest peak at 8,516 metres in Nepal.
• The feat by Naila Kiani and Nadia Azad comes on the heels of another achievement by them just two days ago when they summited Mount Everest, the highest peak.
• They are the first two Pakistani women climbers to have scaled the peak.
• In addition, Naila Kiani had earlier climbed Nepal`s Annapurna peak this season
