1. Weak rupee drives up external debt
The central government`s debt, both within the country and to foreign entities, surged by nearly a third in the 12 months through August, reaching close to Rs64 trillion, State Bank of Pakistan data showed on Thursday.
The 29 per cent increase in debt amounted to Rs14.4tr, as the figure stood at Rs49.57tr by the end of August 2022
2. FM, Afghan counterpart discuss `challenges to peace` in Tibet talks
In the backdrop of an uptick in terror attacks in Pakistan, which are blamed on militants operating from Afghanistan, Caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani on Thursday met his Afghan counterpart Amir Khan Muttaqi in Tibet to take stock of challenges confronting regional peace and stability.
`FM Jilani is in China on a two-day visit to participate in the third Trans-Himalayan Forum for International Cooperation, being held in Nyingchi, Tibet autonomous region, from October 4-5.
3. GSP+ status extended for four years
The European Parliament on Thursday unanimously voted to extend the current generalised system of preferences (GSP) for another four years until 2027 for developing countries, including Pakistan, to enjoy duty-free or minimum duty on exports to the European market.
The parliament voted with 561 in favour, five against and two in abstention to extend the current rules on the GSP schemes, including GSP+ , after talks with the EU Council on the new rules were paused in June, an official statement issued by the EU Parliament said

The Punjab government has discontinued `south Punjab reallocation allowance` that was given to incentivise and attract competent officers to be posted at the south Punjab civil secretariat established during the PTI government in 2020.
The decision may draw ire of the senior officers, who were willingly joining the south Punjab secretariat, when most of them wanted to be posted at the civil secretariat, Lahore
