6. Vetoes fly in UNSC as Israel readies ground assault

Facing growing international pressure to rethink plans of a massive ground assault, PM Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that Israel was preparing for a ground incursion into Gaza, even as Tel Aviv shelling killed more civilians amid growing pressure to deliver aid to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.

7. Israel attacks two Syrian cities, kills eight soldiers

An Israeli attack on military positions in southwest Syria on Wednesday killed eight soldiers and wounded seven more, the Syrian state news agency (SANA) reported.
Citing a military source, SANA said Israel`s `aerial aggression` targeted a number of military positions near the southwestern city of Deraa. The strike also caused material damage, it reported. The attack took place at around 1:45am on Wednesday


8. US sees threat to aircraft carriers as China launches guided missile subs

China has launched its first nuclear-powered guided missile submarines, according to the Pentagon`s latest report on China`s military giving it land and sea attack options once the sole province of US and Russian vessels.
The Pentagon report, published Oct 20, marks the first apparent confirmation that modified submarines seen in Chinese shipyards over the last 18 months are Type 093B guided missile submarines.
The Pentagon report says that in the short term, the Chinese navy `will have the ability to conduct long-range precision strikes against land targets from its submarine and surface combatants using land-attack cruise missiles, notably enhancing (China`s) power projection capability`


9. Erdogan says Hamas is not a terrorist outfit, cancels Tel Aviv visit

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, in his strongest comments yet on the Gaza crisis, said on Wednesday the Hamas was not a terrorist organisation but a liberation group fighting to protect Palestinian lands.
`Hamas is not a terrorist organisation, it is a liberation group, `mujahideen` waging a battle to protect its lands and people,` he told lawmakers from his ruling AK Party, using an Arabic word denoting those who fight for their faith
